@sbbn, the proportions and levels of exposure are way different.
In 1980 Coal Miner's Daughter received a wide release. Today it'd have to make its way through film festivals first, then get picked up for distribution, then *maybe* go wide if it did well in a limited release.
There were definitely shitty movies back then but the ratio of good to bad movies was, what, 1:5? Now it's easily 1:10 - 1:20.

Hit the nail on the head. The bar for what constitutes a "great movie" feels like it keeps getting lowered.
Only one or two of the movies nominated this year for best picture could be considered legitimately "great".
There used to be, what, five nominees for best picture? Now they expanded it to 9-10 saying that "there were so many great movies this year!".

In case anyone should ever lose a script they are working on due to not backing up or the file getting corrupted, there's a gem of a software called Recuva that can help you recover it. Came in handy for me today. Had struggled for 8 hours trying to recover the script until I stumbled on Recuva. So relieved. I was damn near tears, what with the lack of proper support from the good folks at Final Draft.
