  1. Wrote a script centering around a guy who makes a Faustian bargain with a creature he finds in a storage container, managed to make a little teaser for it:

That's pretty interesting -- nice visual effects work on the face too (I'm assuming that's FX...heh).

Got a heavy John Carpenter vibe. Cool!

  2. How much does concept art help in pitching an idea?

You're right Stringer, should have specified, I specifically meant pitching sci-fi.

I was just curious based on Neil Blomkampp's Alien artwork he posted on Instagram.

My advice if you're going to include it is to limit the images and make sure they are getting across a clear, concise message that augments/clarifies the pitch.

Visual images/concept art can be very useful when pitching. As Axalon says, if you're creating a sci-fi world it's a very good idea if you can access the right materials.

  3. Citizenfour is incredible and should be seen by everyone

Amazing. A fictional version would be awful.

I feel the same way about the Man On Wire Zemeckis adaptation.

The Snowden Files book was far more informative, in my opinion. Citizenfour was just an extended, not entirely coherent, interview.

  4. Anybody have the SPECTRE script?

Always the damned third act. I wonder what the internal World War Z emails at Paramount would have looked like.

  5. Interstellar is a movie that without question needs to be seen in IMAX

  6. Copyright question for you guys. I was thinking of (loosely) basing a script on one of Isaac Asimov's short stories which is, of course, copyrighted. Anyway I can use it? I'm not planning on stelling or anything, probably just put it on YouTube.

By the way, I would be very leery about legal opinions from non-attorneys (I know, I know, everyone who seen Law & Order is qualified to practice law). I've seen people end up in serious messes because of that sort of thing.

I went to law school and studied Copyright Law, but never took the bar exam. So not a licensed attorney, but familiar with the subject matter.

Thanks for the lengthy response sbbn and to everyone else for chiming in.

  7. I'm a huge Fincher fan, but Gone Girl didn't blow me away. Performances were good, especially Pike and Perry. I'm not sure if it was the photography but it came off a little dull.

Loved the book, loved the film. But Affleck needs to stop skipping leg day in the gym. He's suffering from Hugh Jackman syndrome -- huge upper body, chicken legs. This of course did not deter my appreciation of the film, important as this issue obviously is. ;-)

Spec_Writer: LMAO Ben's doing the chicken legs diet?! What's up with folk not doing squats and deadlifts these days? so weird...LOL

    4. axalon

Jackman can deadlift ~485lbs, he's not skipping leg day.

  8. Steven Soderbergh gave a speech last year about the state of cinema. Found it really insightful. https://vimeo.com/65060864

Looks good. Trailer style and visuals remind me of P.T. Anderson. Magnolia, There will be Blood...

Because the script was unique, very well written and has a chance to be an awesome movie.

GREAT script, great casting....I'm a bit concerned about that trailer tho...seems diff than i expected (tone, performance choices, etc)

Yeah tone of the teaser didn't match the way I read it, but if the story evolution works I'm all for it. Loved the script.

  11. Leftovers was alright but Justin Theroux was great. Why is this guy not working more?

justin theroux is brilliant and he, Liv Tyler, Amy Brennaman (sp), etc. along with the rest of the cast is what's keeping me watching the show...

  12. So The Rover's budget was ~$12 million and it made $69K opening weekend. Probably won't make more than $100K in its total theatrical run. Is there any hope for it to recover its budget? How much money can this movie potentially make on VOD/rental? Could it ever make up for its budget or is it just a dud for the studio?

VOD releasing is still very new, and somehow hard to track. I think it's more of "behind closed doors" than anything, seeing as how tracking the numbers of rentals and purchases should be incredibly easy. Releasing on VOD for a low budget (maybe 5-8 million and under) can be quite successful, but the other issue becomes piracy because as soon as a film drops on VOD, someone out there has already pirated a 1080 copy of the film for free. It's a bummer to see because most VOD o...

Just saw this. Terrific filmmaking, acting, and all around goodness.. A bit too long (too much looping!) so I was exhausted / relieved when it was finally over. Not a classic but damn good sci-fi.

I'd second this. Shows too. Been more than a couple spoilers on the updates feed.

I suppose we could do it in The Biz forum? But really, no one hardly posts there lol.

  15. Wow, have you seen the extended cut of 'That Thing You Do!'? The editor made Hanks look brilliant with that theatrical cut. The extended cut feels almost like a completely different movie. The pace is way off and it's no where near as fun.

I can't believe someone besides myself has seen that cut (That Thing You Do is one of my favorite 90s movies). And I completely agree with you. Very unnecessary additions.

I love that movie, but have not seen the extended cut.
