  1. Nice freelance piece about the brutal world of a struggling writer. Haven't seen any of his films but I do respect the man. http://badassdigest.com/2015/03/02/from-hollywood-to-homeless-the-writer-of-jason-x-and-drive-angry-on-screenw/

Brutally honest, which makes fellow writers not feel so alone in this...

  2. I'm curious how an unrepped writer got his stuff into producers and studios... any know more?

  3. Next question for writers: have you ever received payment for net points on the back end of a deal? I'd be stunned if anyone has, but asking anyway.

You can, however, put box office bonuses into your contract...

  4. Question for the writers on TB: have you ever had an optional writing step exercised? (I haven't and am curious.)

  5. How come The File Exchange has been so dry of new scripts lately? Did they change the rules about posting?

Dustin is correct in my answer - package with a director, talent, etc. Takes months. Sometimes never pays off. Basically doing the studio's job for them.

I think agencies are pushing writers to wait and package before taking a spec out...

  7. Looking for a current list of Managers that accept unsolicited subs/queries? I searched and only found an old list from 2011, plus it didn't specify if they accept unsol. subs. Thanks guys!

Placing in some sort of decently prestigious or recognized script competition will help you greatly...

  8. Anyone else mildly annoyed by the spec "racing into territories" hype? Producers bring specs into territories. That's just the way it works. A spec going into territories is not particularly newsworthy.

Yes, and it's an attempt to build heat... nothing more. But agencies know this.

Couldn't get through VICE. Wanted to love it, loved the era and details, was bored to tears by the events/plot...

They're not buying right now, apparently -- but something will probably POP next week and re-spark it all... still, not encouraging.

  20. If you are an aspiring screenwriter who wants desperately to tell the stories that pop in your head at all hours of the day, the FUCKING IGNORE all this nonsense, about what is a sale and what isn't. Jesus. The people talking about this the most, won't be around in two years. Get a bottle. Stand in a lightning storm and pray you capture it. Or just write great stuff. You do the math.

If you're in this for the money, you will bow out quickly. But knowing what the ACTUAL MARKET IS is crucial if you plan to understand this business and make a living at it.
