  1. Question: Do feature comedy specs sell anymore? I can't remember the last one that sold to a studio. Seems like everything is developed in-house or with attachments. Am I wrong?

  2. I think I'm using the term PRELAP wrong? I'm using it for a VO that starts before that scene begins. Is that correct?

I like using prelap to segue into certain scenes. Nothing at all wrong with it under the right circumstances, IMO.

  4. According to Gahgan, this is an old screenwriting expression: "Shall we have him pet the dog?" First, has anyone actually heard that expression before? Second, what the eff does that mean?? (and if you're speculating, fine but please say so, and if you have source, please provide)

  8. So, Homeland - I hate you. Incidentally, make the identity of the CIA mole more obvious. All the subtlety of a punch to the balls.

Definitely agree that the daughter's subplot is torture to watch. But when Martin Donovan used the word "nucular," I almost turned it off for good.

  11. TBers who use tablets to read scripts on (iPad, Kindle Fire, Galaxy Tab) How has your experience been with it? Does it hurt your eyes to read off something like that for extended periods of time?

  12. I imagine some of you already saw this one, but here's a pretty cool behind-the-scenes look into the Breaking Bad writers' room: http://www.uproxx.com/tv/2013/08/breaking-bad-writers-room-photos/

  13. This guy is the fucking tits. Studios and prodcos take note.

  14. Thinking of getting a MFA in screenwriting... thoughts?

    1. StringerBell

Absolutely worthless. One of my buddies has an MFA in screenwriting and tells me it was a huge mistake.

  15. What do you think the budgetary cut off is for producing a script with unknown/relatively unknown actors? For instance 'Chronicle' was made for $12 million but didn't have any big names attached. At what point would most studios go "okay, we need an A-lister"?

  17. They renamed 'All You Need is Kill' to "Edge of Tomorrow'? Why??

I prefer ALL YOU NEED IS THE EDGE OF TOMORROW.

It's not illegal, but it certainly contravenes the WGA MBA.

Shadow, the stealing of the material isn't all that common (but definitely happens), but the studio bringing in a LOT of writers for a rewrite project happens ALL THE TIME. Some writers are brought in to pitch even though the studio already knows they won't be hired (often based on their quotes).

More likely, you'll work your ass off coming up with a take, then pitch it and the studio will take all of the best ideas, incorporate them into the script without giving you credit and hire one of the other dozen or so writers they had in to pitch it. But maybe I'm just jaded...

  22. Just as I suspected: "...an excuse for ostensibly grown men to drink their own urine, kick around a guy’s severed head and have long, drawn-out arguments about their autoerotic habits in “This Is the End.”" from Variety's review. Pass.
