  1. I'm looking for romantic comedy/dramedy movies or scripts about a married couple who break up and get back together at the end of the movie (e.g. The Ex). Any suggestions? Thanks.

  2. Need a comedy spec to read. Tired of reading sci-fi. I mean, I'm not, because I love sci-fi, but I need to read more comedies. Any to recommend?

I loved USED GUYS, but I'm not sure it was a spec. It's several years old, but it's really well done.

  3. If you are an aspiring screenwriter who wants desperately to tell the stories that pop in your head at all hours of the day, the FUCKING IGNORE all this nonsense, about what is a sale and what isn't. Jesus. The people talking about this the most, won't be around in two years. Get a bottle. Stand in a lightning storm and pray you capture it. Or just write great stuff. You do the math.

Apparently not, funforall. If you want to have an understanding about what working writers actually make in this business, you should not be taken seriously and you have very little chance to break into the business.

TBRed, with all due respect, I am VERY serious about this career choice and I find it to be absolutely worthy of discussion.

What about the people quitting their jobs to pursue the million dollar sale, Mike? I'm all for people pursuing their dreams, but they should know that the million dollar sale is just a dream.

Funforall, I don't think it's the industry intentionally trying to mislead aspiring writers, but rather the media's desire for a STORY. What would you rather read? "Overnight success breaks in with million dollar script sale" or "part-time screenwriter of twelve years with nineteen scripts under his belt finally scores a $10k option"? And as one poster above noted, the agents and writer want the heat associated with those big headlines, whether or not they...

  7. I'd love to know how many recent "sales" are actually options and not what they claim...

MANY projects listed as sales are just options. In fact, I'd say MOST projects listed as sales are just options. There's some proof for John Gary's Twitter rant.

I don't know John Gary, but what he's saying resonates with me and is entirely consistent with what I see in the business.

  9. DAVID VS. GOLIATH, storyline kept under wraps. Seriously? Is that an April Fools joke?

I REALLY hope they keep the part about the foreskins. One of my favorite parts of the bible and so rarely discussed on Sundays... or any other day for that matter.

  10. Easy on the eyes, but NOAH was a steaming pile. I like what Ken Ham had to say in Time: I like what Ken Ham had to say in Time I like what Ken Ham had to say in Time http://time.com/42274/ken-ham-the-unbiblical-noah-is-a-fable-of-a-film/

  11. Unsure if I should be really excited about the Fargo FX series or somewhat wary of it. Great cast and pedigree, so hoping for the best. Big fan of the film.

  12. It's strange, exciting and humbling to be rewriting writers whose work I really admire and whose quote is quadruple my own.

  13. I did a rewrite for a script in Final Draft and my buddy doesn't have the program. Is there anything I can export it to so he can edit??

  14. What's the deal with OWAs? Can someone explain?

Basically you spend a couple of weeks busting your ass to improve a script that likely was a good spec turned into a steaming pile of shit by terrible producers. Then you pitch your work and they decide to steal the best parts of your pitch and give the rewrite job to their friend, cousin, former assistant or the like. But one might see that as the pessimistic view.

  16. Really not sure how to feel about American Hustle. On one hand, I admire the theme of the story and the ambition of the storytelling; on the other hand, it feels like a hot mess and is just not as satisfying as it should be.

LOL. People who say they loved the movie didn't "actually" love it? They only say they did to avoid being shunned by their intelligent and cultured peers? FYI, I saw the movie well before I saw any reviews for it and I ACTUALLY loved it. And since when is great acting not a legitimate reason to enjoy a movie? In addition to that, I thought it was great storytelling and directing, too.

I LOVED it. Bale was phenomenal, as was Lawrence. My favorite movie of the year and I'd give them both Oscars as well as Russel. I'd give best supporting to Jonah Hill and best actress to Streep.

  19. Scorsese needs a new editor he trusts. WOLF OF WALL STREET suffers from its length and just about every scene runs too long, sapping the film (and audience) of its energy.

Dan, I agree with a lot of what you said. Jonah Hill is awesome. He and McConaughey were the highlights and you're right about Margot Robbie - wow! I enjoyed the lemmon sequence, too, but it would have been a LOT better had it been cut back, particularly at the country club stairs.

To each his own, Dan. I'm sure people will enjoy it. I would've enjoyed it a lot more at two hours.

  21. Say you have a character who is stuttering. Do you write the dialogue like he's stuttering or do you leave a note and let the actors do their job?

    1. StringerBell

      StringerBell

I agree with ddollar. The reader will forget about the stutter if you let them.

  22. "LOVE" - short I wrote - just won Best Film at Southampton Film Week. Not the Oscars - but still nice cool that the film's out there making its way in the world.
