  1. Looking for a current list of Managers that accept unsolicited subs/queries? I searched and only found an old list from 2011, plus it didn't specify if they accept unsol. subs. Thanks guys!

You are much more likely to run up against the "no unsolicited material" response from agents and prodcos.

Honestly you should just cold submit wherever. What's the worst that can happen? They don't respond (which is identical to a co. that does take unsolicited). Believe me if your pitch is actually strong that won't stop people from requesting it.

Someone posted it in File Exchange and then took down the thread. I'm assuming -- a) he/she posted the wrong script -- or B) he/she got told to pull it off the site.

      So... anyone know what happened?

Homeland is a great show. I'd like to see it win something. Not seeing any breakout indies this year, like a Winter's Bone or Animal Kingdom.

Rich Ross always struck me as being mostly lucky. Not the greatest judge of anything but things generally worked out in his favor until the big promotion. There are lots of stories about him being an ass and not being qualified but none of that really mattered. Mainstream media, and not just industry news, started in with Disney - Ross - JC - failure and he was toast.

  10. Does anyone know if a guy named Frankie Peay has sold any spec scripts or had his name on scripts by Hunter Richards or Marc Rocco? This would have been a while back, late 90s, early 2000s? Thank you.

      IMDB list Frankie Peay as:

Producer: Original Gangstas & Hot City. All from 1996.

  11. The Incredible Burt Wonderstone was pretty funny. I give it a B; not bad, considering the state of comedy films these days. But if it came out 10 years ago, would it have killed at the b.o.? It wanted to be Anchorman, but there just was no getting around that there's no urgency or relevance in the subject matter. Thoughts?

      mercutio

I haven't seen it yet, though I worked a few days on set as an extra, and it was a fun set. Buscemi, in particular, was hysterical when I was there. But even as much fun as it was to be on that set, I kept thinking Vegas magicians would have been a better world for a movie 10 or 15 years ago.

    4. specwriter

      specwriter

Yeah, the Jim Carrey character really skewers David Blaine and Chris Angel...and that's the problem. I always love Steve Carell, and it's still funny, but the same cast in a different scenario or maybe just a rewrite with a different angle could have worked so much better.

  12. Watched Crazy, Stupid Love and really enjoyed it and was impressed with the writing. Is the script close to the film?

    1. mebishop2001

      mebishop2001

Pretty close. The movie in my mind when reading the spec was better than the final product, but still pretty good. I think a different director might have improved it a little. If you like that, check out other Dan Fogelman scripts like MY MOTHER'S CURSE.

    2. sbbn

      sbbn

Loved the script and read it some 6-7 months before I saw the movie. I felt the movie was very close to the script, particularly when compared to how some films look in relation to the script.

    3. sbbn

      sbbn

Btw, definitely worth reading the script - it is very, very well written and a great example of how a script should look.

  13. Question on cursing in a single-cam sitcom pilot script: Is it okay if I write in a cheeky *note to the reader* like "the curse words can be bleeped if it ends up on network and if it's HBO, then fuck it and let it ride?" I don't want the reader to immediately assume when they see shits and f-bombs that this has to be pay-cable. They do plenty of bleeping now on ad-supported networks. Seen this done before?

    1. Reader George

      Reader George

If you're trying to write to any network you may end up writing to none of them, and your script's tone may suffer.

      Zoned

Fugg't, man. I say write it... all over the goddamn place. Then, when you do a rough polish, after you have distanced yourself from it enough, and before you actually send it out to anybody, edit it out.

  14. Watched the pilot for "The Strain" today. It's good, but I had hoped for better. It doesn't hit with the impact of Darabont's Walking Dead pilot. Del Toro directed and the casting and performances are a bit rough. Only the first ep, so I'm sure it will find its groove.

    1. craktactor

      craktactor

I compare it to Stephen King's "It". And by that, I mean when the "monster" was revealed. Not that there was a "monster" revealed in Under the Dome, but it was, to me, quite underwhelming. Laughable, actually. But as I've stated many times here, it's all subjective.

I know the answer before I even ask, but why why why is Scarlett Johansson in this? I'm sure that tiny pistol and total lack of superpowers is definitely going to save the world.

Her cocking her pistol is definitely the comedic relief of the trailer. But, in all seriousness, if she's not going to show more cleavage or accidentally get caught coming out of a shower, well then she better have a bigger gun hidden somewhere!

it means that producers are requesting that agents/managers allow them to take in a spec script to their respective studios. So if Producer A has a deal or relationships with certain studios or buyers, they would want an exclusive right to submit a spec to those places.
