That bridge set piece is beyond belief. Unbearably tense. No SFX, they shot every frame for real.

  4. Next question for writers: have you ever received payment for net points on the back end of a deal? I'd be stunned if anyone has, but asking anyway.

I know the producer of a $10m movie that went on to gross 200m worldwide. According to Hwood accounting, it has yet to make a profit.

  6. Question for the writers on TB: have you ever had an optional writing step exercised? (I haven't and am curious.)

When you say exercised, do you mean commissioned?

  7. How come The File Exchange has been so dry of new scripts lately? Did they change the rules about posting?

One word of caution - a pilot may only be half the length/writing of a feature spec, but the work required to prep those characters, and create a returnable "story engine" is massive - as I have found out. Spec pilot does NOT = less work than 120 page feature spec...

It used to be the case that a spec feature would put you on a list for all kinds of assignments. But with the studios sticking to SFX-driven IP, the odds of landing a feature assignment seem much tougher. But if you write a good spec pilot, even if it doesn't sell, your agent has a sample that could catch the attention of a showrunner...

PS I'm developing my first spec pilot with a film producer who, like me, wants to move into TV.

Last year I did the water bottle tour. It seemed the writing was on the wall back then - everyone was talking about TV and I met two producers with the title "head of film" on their business cards who weren't making any films, but they did have a passion for their TV slates.

Are there fewer specs coming out in Jan this year? Seems like new spec posts on the TB main page are few and far between. Maybe everyone's writing TV pilots?

The greatest disservice Team America did was to make the late Kim Il Jung into a joke. I once used him in an action movie and the notes came back that I couldn't use him because he was too comedy. Reality - he and his son have slaughtered millions via starvation and concentration camp. That's the movie Hwood should be making.

If the Aurora theater shooting hadn't happened, they wouldn't be taking this threat so seriously. Remember that N Korea is one big personality cult. No shortage of citizens who would give their lives to avenge this slight on their leader.

  23. story endings with protagonists walking away from camera, resuming an argument or banter or repartee? It seems like a convention (like riding off into sunset), yet I'm stuck for examples.
