  1. Say what you will about Damon Lindelof, I think he makes some good points in this: http://www.vulture.com/2013/08/script-doctor-damon-lindelof-on-blockbuster-screenwriting.html

sure he makes excuses but film is a collaborative process. when something fails it's most likely due to a lot of people's mistakes.

@dsjones... yea that end action sequence seemed out of place and unnecessary. I also hated how hard everyone was hitting each other and yet sustaining no visible damage

  2. Really enjoyed MUD. Jeff Nicholas has some serious ability, simple story with good writing, good direction, beautiful photography. Would recommend.

Yep, fantastic movie. One of the year's best along with BEFORE MIDNIGHT, STOKER, FRANCES HA, PLACE BEYOND THE PINES, DRUG WAR and FRUITVALE STATION. Been a good year for movies so far if you can just ignore the popcorn movies.

@ira It really sucks how all those movies you listed got completely buried under crap like R.I.P.D.

If only those movies had the advertising campaigns like the aforementioned.

  3. Wrote a script centering around a guy who makes a Faustian bargain with a creature he finds in a storage container, managed to make a little teaser for it:

It's about a guy who does his thing. And his family, his family's a real mess - because conflict! And there's the mob, and hookers, and crazy women everywhere and Liev! Liev Schreiber! Checks! Checks for everyone!

So I take it the show hasn't improved since the pilot?

@jones No, not at all. Story threads get picked up and dropped at whim. I think they really thought "let's make this girl a lesbian, yeah, that'll make her interesting!". And that's pretty much all we know about her, is that she likes women and she's "tough". This can be extended to pretty much every character on the show. His wife gets super pissed at him annnnd then she's cool with everything.

I'm amazed Showtime picked up the show at a...

  5. So The Rover's budget was ~$12 million and it made $69K opening weekend. Probably won't make more than $100K in its total theatrical run. Is there any hope for it to recover its budget? How much money can this movie potentially make on VOD/rental? Could it ever make up for its budget or is it just a dud for the studio?

VOD releasing is still very new, and somehow hard to track. I think it's more of "behind closed doors" than anything, seeing as how tracking the numbers of rentals and purchases should be incredibly easy. Releasing on VOD for a low budget (maybe 5-8 million and under) can be quite successful, but the other issue becomes piracy because as soon as a film drops on VOD, someone out there has already pirated a 1080 copy of the film for free. It's a bummer to see because most VOD o...

  6. What do you guys think of the Interstellar trailer? I love the little details like the not-so-pristine hypersleep chambers and the gravitational lensing around the wormhole. Also interesting seeing the small changes Nolan made to his brother's script like Murph being a girl instead of a boy.

You're right Stringer, should have specified, I specifically meant pitching sci-fi.

Visual images/concept art can be very useful when pitching. As Axalon says, if you're creating a sci-fi world it's a very good idea if you can access the right materials.

I don't give a shit whether Dana or mom are great actresses -- Brody's gone so the rest of the family needs to go. I don't need a show about families working through their interpersonal issues. I have American Dad for that.

    4. sbbn

      sbbn

No shit "he's not really gone" but when they include him in all of one episode for the entire first half to the season and for no real meaningful purpose, for all intents and purposes to the most present episode, he's non-existent.
