  1. I've said it before, I'll say it again: marketing needs to be completely overhauled in this game. How on earth did we slide back to cheesily narrated trailers? -

Flawed garbage, like test screenings. Average moviegoer doesn’t analyze a film after they exit, especially if they enjoyed it. People have been searching for ways to beat the stock market for years. There’s no free lunch in that. Same deal with movies. Con men loveth a sucker.

Magic Mike performed poorly in test audiences, but killed it in the BO ... anyone who tells you they have a magical formula is selling snake oil.

There are people telling me daily that algorithms will one day rule our lives. I can tell you for certain that THOSE people have never been in LOVE. And if they have, it's merely an anomalous affection quotient attributable to the overindulgence in substances inducing outlying, abnormal, and uncorroberatable eroginea factors...No?

  2. Any DSLR cinematographers out there who can recommend some good, affordable old SLR lenses which would be good for a Canon T3i? Models and personal recs would be greatly appreciated.

What's your budget? I use 1970's Nikon lenses and found some great deals on eBay (for 24mm, 50mm, and 135mm).

Budget is around 800. I've got some wide angle, now I'm looking into telescopic/zoom lenses.

I would definitely check out ebay or keh.com. You should be able to get yourself an 85mm f/1.8 and a 135mm f/2 and still have a little left over.

I'm halfway in and enjoying it. Don't know about the fantasy stuff but I could see a bunch of actors having fun with these roles. With Jaws so often on the cable channels it'd be fun to have something like this for a double feature.

I agree, Foz. And that Best Man speech felt utterly interminable. That's what I mean about these episodes being too long. The character stuff is drawn out and the mystery is rushed. Did like the very ending and the use of "Oh What A Night".

  10. Breaking Bad's final two episodes are 75 minutes each. So I'm betting 5 extra minutes of story, 10 extra minutes of commercials? Hope AMC's making a pretty penny off those ad sales.

Sorry, trying to be low-key about it. I'm sure BB will be worth all the commercials. The DVD sets are the way to watch this series anyway, as we all know.

agreed. I just rolled my eyes. I need the broadcast networks to back off the remakes and come up with original material. There are some exceptions (John Glenn's adaption of the british mini IDENTITY is an extremely solid pilot, and a miniseries I think that COULD be easily adapted over here) but leave it alone. I'm expecting to hear CBS or ABC to remake THE FALL shortly. smh

    3. dsjones

      dsjones

Network doesn't do miniseries - that's the problem. They're adapting works that don't have longevity. How has no one sat at the table and gone "Hang on, wait a minute here - this can't be sustained because X, Y, and Z remakes tried it and all crashed and burned."

I hope he jumps at the offer - It'll mean very little free time between Interstellar and Bond...Daniel Craig in a Chris Nolan Bond film...dear god.

    3. dsjones

      dsjones

I feel like if Nolan did sign on, he'd be given the time. His name ensures a certain degree of quality and they want their follow up to be a success. They saw how extra time helped skyfall, so rushing it doesn't make sense. Also, what's the word on this is it a two parter, or just tangential story threads that link them thematically?

  13. Clint Eastwood + American Sniper...I'm officially excited about this project again.

  14. Did anyone watch the Walking Dead finale? What a mess...While there was one major scene that I loved (think you might be able to guess which - it was the big one) the idea of "resolution" in the manner presented? Horrible. Just...horrible.

TWD: the season finale was a reset of sorts...but, eh...Even though Andrea is still alive in the comics and fighting alongside Rick *AND* one of the strongest female characters in the comic series (next to Michonne and others), her death wasn't surprising at all since the writers were clearly running out ideas on what to do with her. In a lot of respects, Andrea was a character that the writers didn't really know what to do with and just gave her stupid things to do, etc. Even the mom...

Also, I think Gotham could theoretically work. Batman wasn't awesome because it was Batman; Batman was awesome because of the villains. It's an interesting idea to place the villains, who really only have an equal in Batman in a scenario where there is no Batman. Give them the upper-hand by a long stretch.

The only star wars prequels that are canon are the ones i've outlined in my mind. I'll say this: the villains are interesting, but a response to Batman's presence. He's the light that draws the insects out at night. This series would probably just focus on the deterioration of Gordon's faith and principles while seeing the blatant corruption going on around the city...which could really just be any cop show. I want a reason for this to be set in the Batman universe, even i...

Interestingly enough, I remember reading the pilot and feeling underwhelmed.

There was a scene in the pilot script where Hannibal approaches a teenage girl smoking a cigarette. We then cut to him pounding lung tissue in his kitchen, he samples the meat then says "pre-smoked".

Hannibal with one-liners? I was afraid the series was going to be kind of a joke with lines like that but I'm glad to see they cut things like that from the show as it's definitely...

...I don't remember that scene in the script I read. But then again it was a while ago. That said, Hannibal has an insane amount of cannibalism puns. It's like he wants to get caught... (cue feral fight scene).

  19. Hannibal Season 2 might be the greatest piece of television I have ever seen. That finale, while slow at times, builds to the most emotionally devastating set piece to air on television.

Axalon: it was the kinda heavy handed story I wrote in Screenwriting 101 in college. It was cringeworthy to see on screen. Two editors and they weren't able to figure out that it was cancer to the story? Just start with them as children, get all that out of the way at the start, then jump to how it all went wrong - then one really quick flashback montage (of everything we've seen right as "destiny" is achieved). He was struggling with this story and getting all the pieces and...

I knew about the British rooftop scene, but they fooled me by doing it in the first episode. In any case, it had a very visceral shock effect. Loved the speech to the mirror at the end too, after 'ignoring' us the whole episode. I'm not going to binge, I'm going to savor.
