  4. Just read The Field. Very interesting horror/thriller spec. It's worth checking out, but it starts rough.

Nice! Always love hearing the recommendations - trims my read pile, and adds some quality to the top. Thanks!

Happy to oblige! I've on to MailMen, should have that done soon...

Which I just finished. It had great dialogue and clever situations, but mostly felt like a first draft with lots that could be cut so it's a pass.

  5. I'm starting to think we need a new kickstarter that doesn't allow you to post if your networth is over 2 million...Like Slamdance to Sundance!

Ignore the source, here's my pitch:

10 people get picked to be on a reality show sent to Mars. It's shot like Blair Witch/Apollo 18, it's a lot like Halloween: Resurrection with a touch of Dead Space the game. Oh and somehow Bioshock is in there.

    2. Nic.Lishko

      Nic.Lishko

And on the way, people start disappearing and going insane....so maybe it's a lot more like And Then There Were None.....F who wouldn't buy that?!

    3. dsjones

      dsjones

The twist is they're in a hollywood studio and no where near mars.

  6. A very big THANK YOU to everyone who sent me engouraging messages or ideas when I mentioned my dry writing spell. This community is awesome and so are all of you.

  8. Hey United Kingdom people, what's the best way to go from Dublin to London and back again? Looking for suggestions :)

    1. twofingeredtypist

      twofingeredtypist

Coach (bus) cheapest or Ryan Air (cattle truck of the sky) for cheapo flights

    2. sangun

      sangun

Flying if you don't care about seeing what you're flying over. There's also Virgin Rail which is about 60% less hellish than a coach trip.

    3. Nic.Lishko

      Nic.Lishko

Thanks! It's just a quick flyover from Dublin to London, will only be in London for a day, then back to Dublin for a flight back to AZ. :D

  9. We didn't win, but were happy to be in the top 20 at T3F. Here's out short. Let me know what you think! http://vimeo.com/37072239

Thank you. It was my first 48 hour film festival and I've definitely learned a lot from the experience. Thanks for the honest feedback, this is thick skin :)

Dug it! But that better not be the final mix on Bane's audio! Couldn't understand jack of what he was saying.

    2. Nic.Lishko

      Nic.Lishko

That's what all of us said as we left. I'm sure they're more than aware of the issue. As I left I asked "Is Bane gonna get subtitles?"

    3. AliM

      AliM

Big Nolan fan, but his track record with sound design leads me to fear that Bane's voice won't be altered that much at all, and somehow these choices are all part of Nolan's aesthetic (see Watanabe's sometimes-hard-to-understand accent in 'Inception' smothered in booming score; And ditto for the Scarecrow in Batman Begins)

  11. Reading When The Street Lights Go On. REALLY good 57 pages in..Updating member reviews all day...

What I'm most amazed of is that melancholy vibe... feels something like The Wonder Years or Stand By Me... or even The Virgin Suicides.

  12. Finally saw Drive. Was at first annoyed at the pacing, turned out quite good. Downloading soundtrack...NOW.

I'll get on that Red. Call me old fashioned Cyber, but so far I would say the best film of the year is Midnight in Paris :D.

I saw that. I am both interested and skeptical at the same time, but I hope for the best. It would be a great way for writers to break in if it works.

The test for the right genre should be your own personal taste. If you can objectively say that you'd go see your movie opening weekend if it wasn't yours, then you're doing the right thing, irregardless of what the spec market is or isn't. Do good work and the offers will follow...

    2. Nic.Lishko

      Nic.Lishko

Danke dude. Good to hear that kind of stuff.

LOL. Thanks geek :D I remember it being a huge spec sale.

      My recent DVD views...

Insidious: Kinda scary but not THAT scary.

Serenity: Unwatchable if you're not a fan of the TV show. 20-25 minutes of exposition to begin the film? Ugh -- I'm now really worried about Whedon's Avengers.

Lifeboat, Hitchcock -- very dated and hoaky, can't say it stands the test of time very well.

    2. Cyber Hater

      Cyber Hater

BDrip review - "the exorcist" scared the shit outta me. "The Fall" is BEAUTIFUL. "Haloween" has been on repeat. Carpenter's version is way more solid than Zombie's (admirable) re-make.

      Nic.Lishko

      Sweet, thanks dudes!

  18. Gary Whitta tweeted that he sold a tv script yesterady. Anyone got any leads on that?

  19. Any suggestions on how to find out if a movie is being shot in your area?

    1. mikeyP_73

      mikeyP_73

Start at the state level. Usually your state posts (in their film department website if they have one) upcoming movies or shows. Then if that doens't work, start at the major city level... I know NYC, Chicago, Vegas, Detroit, NoLa, etc does that ... call your state or local film department if there is one.

    2. treyselman

      treyselman

state film commissions are a good place. otherwise. get your hands on a Production Weekly or PRS Report. Good luck.

A lot of the site says Under Construction :P! Thanks AZ. They shot Everything Must Go 10 minutes from my house, so I'm bummed I missed a chance to check it out. I'll keep looking though, thanks peeps!

  20. EpicMealTime is signed to Gersh? Sheesh anything is possible!

      mikeyP_73

Ugh. Don't get me started. I think the more stupid an idea is but has a huge following, people just glom on - I don't know why. It's like the same thing with that annoying Orange short that become huge. Ugh indeed

I don't mean to sound bitter (3 years ago I pitched to them, but I guess they didn't like a family comedy... >:o NEVER FORGIVE!!jk)

A friend of mine who writes children's fiction reminded me that a clever, funny, quick youtube series with an avg. of 2 million views will get anyone signed these days...I still think it's funny though, just wanted to rant when i found out they got signed for it :P. And yes, Agent Orange, Fred, Smosh and most of the other kids th...

  21. Just read an INCREDIBLY depressing article by Jon Jost on filmmakermagzine.com. Buzzkill..http://www.filmmakermagazine.com/news/2011/02/the-microbudget-conversation-what-are-festivals-good-for/#

Everybody loves to project their bullshit on people when it comes to making micro, indie, medium budget, big budget stuff. Too much hate on why making films/new media/tv/shorts sucks in this day an age of mass digital consumption, consumer ADD, etc etc etc .... don't buy into it.... everything is a thing and nothing is in your control... or is it?

    2. Nic.Lishko

      Nic.Lishko

Interesting. I've just been getting more into the indie scene (saw Quiet City, Eagle Vs. Shark and Nice Guy Johnny all in the same day) and since I don't live in LA I figured it might be worth a shot. Just don't wanna do mumblecore :D

    3. Nic.Lishko

      Nic.Lishko

And while I'm on THAT note, yes people do project their bs on others. Taking into account the Consumer ADD, I think the market is mashed down with too much nonsensical (Fred, youtubepoop or whatever) and not enough sensical. My only issue with the "current" state of indie is no one cares about the stories or like Quiet City are just so boring you do want to gouge the eyes out. A delicate balance, but there's my ADD posting for ya. Duplass brothers do it and Cyrus was pretty awesome!

  22. Really REALLY want to see Win Win.

      Burn baby burn!

I'm all about ripping thru the 1st draft -- but I always do revisions while writing daily tho -- so when that draft is done it reads like 3rd draft... Try it -- Eric Roth's style
