  1. If you ever need a good lesson on dialogue, go to a coffee shop/McDonalds in a small town and just listen to how the old folks gossip.

I like to think of the 'bad guys closing in' aspect of STC not so much in literal terms, but rather as an increasing sense of pressure being applied to the hero. In this case, it's the ever-present 'ticking clock' by which Lou must come up with something new and better each night before 6am.

Yeah, the discussion of character often gets lost in how people view Snyder's beat sheet, but fundamentally his sheet is about character metamorphosis. The thing that's different about Nightcrawler is the metamorphosis is really fucking bleak and scary. The beats are still there. But we don't see very much of this kind of negative metamorphosis on screen anymore (at least, not since the late 60's - mid 70's). Most of the time, Hollywood characters change for the bette...

Definitely their broadest and most accessible film. Thought the last half of the third act was their best work to date. Definitely altered from the initial script I read.

    3. treyselman

      treyselman

That said, it was a pretty big departure from their mumblecore beginnings. Saw it at AFF last fall. Crowd dug it.

      Nic.Lishko

I'm glad they're getting away from the mumblecore. Quiet City (not them, but in that genre) is awful.

  13. Just finished Chris Borrelli's "Sad Jack." Not sure what to make of it. Amazing tone. Feels like "Snatch" meets "Leon: The Professional." Wouldn't know how to review it, but it was good writing for sure.

In regards to the terrible title, when our CE told me about this one, I passed on it from hearing the title alone. It wasn't until later in the day I realized Borelli wrote it. Who the hell would chose that title. It sounds like the movie Ben Stiller made in "Tropic Thunder"... which I'm surprised no one has tried to make yet.

      Last act was uneventful though

    2. Nic.Lishko

      Nic.Lishko

Correct. I felt like it was a "faster" version of The Road (book not movie) that still left a lot to be desired.

  15. Just finished Jack Goes Boating...Totally unwhelmed me. I didn't know what the film wanted to be. Sad, I was hoping for tons more.

  16. Just finished reading The End. Very interesting, definitely see why it landed so high...

Agree - one of my favorite reads of the year... but also one of those films I don't see making all that much money, regardless of cast.

    2. Nic.Lishko

      Nic.Lishko

Sure. I think it would make maybe 20 mil? Like I said in my mini review, I liked the way he wrote it MOST of the time :D

  17. Just finished writing a review (if on can call it that) of Agent Ox. I pose some odd questions, so take a look!

  18. Just found out a script i spent the last 6 months working on sounds a lot like something that sold in January. Pacing the room...

Just had the same experience where my reps are discouraging me to spec a script that I had been developing for six months.Frustrating!Maybe I need to turn it into a novel...

  19. Just got back from seeing The Future, by Miranda July. Confusing. Quite confusing.

      admin

Was it at least good confusing?

    2. Nic.Lishko

      Nic.Lishko

Maybe? It's hard to say. The trailer was deceiving as all crap which probably was what really pissed me off at the end of the day. I give it 2 mleh's out of 5.

  20. Just left the first six minutes of Dark Knight Rises. Oh my...

Dug it! But that better not be the final mix on Bane's audio! Couldn't understand jack of what he was saying.

    2. Nic.Lishko

      Nic.Lishko

That's what all of us said as we left. I'm sure they're more than aware of the issue. As I left I asked "Is Bane gonna get subtitles?"

    3. AliM

      AliM

Big Nolan fan, but his track record with sound design leads me to fear that Bane's voice won't be altered that much at all, and somehow these choices are all part of Nolan's aesthetic (see Watanabe's sometimes-hard-to-understand accent in 'Inception' smothered in booming score; And ditto for the Scarecrow in Batman Begins)

  21. Just now realized there's no Brit List this year. Sad.

Did the Brits stop writing scripts? Wouldn't be surprised, with the state of the British film industry at the moment.

Well stated. I did read your review and saw your reference to "Equilibrium" and thought to myself, "I didn't like that script either," so you're correct. Dystopian future projects can be a tough sell for me.
