  1. Hypothetical: If you just completed a high concept, rated R comedy, would you take it out wide now or wait until January?

  3. Does anyone know if more Black List scripts come out later in the year, rather than earlier? A la most Oscar nominees.

I always have to pause whenever I see James Vanderbilt's name cuz I think, "Holy shit Dawson sold a script" Then I remember, oh yeah, different guy, similar name. And this guy's a solid writer. Good on him!

  8. Reading all these casting updates/rumors for "Out of the Furnace" and all I can think is, 'Is that really a better title than "Low Dweller"?

  10. Maybe late to the party but really enjoyed Blood Mountain. Stokes is such an elegant writer.

Yeah he does the Texas/ border feel really well. And yet, according to his bio -- MOFO is from NEW YORK CITY!... NEW YORK CITY? Bonus points to any old fart who gets that.

  11. A guy bumped my chair in a restaurant today and lifted my laptop case without me noticing. It ended up in lost and found when all he found were scripts inside.

  12. MUST...READ....Picture Book...

  13. Was Graham Moore actually a new writer when he sold Imitation Game or is that just media spin? Does anyone know his backstory?

I meant "unsold" as in never sold a feature spec -- but had written for TV as well as the novel.

He was a published novelist, but previously unsold as a screenwriter. His mom is or was (not sure status) Michelle Obama's Chief of Staff. Apparently, he worked in TV with a writing partner and this was his breakout solo effort.

  15. When does the Black List come out? I thought it was supposed the be out the second Friday of this month (which was this last Fri).

  16. 3 hours... 40 minutes I'm told.

  17. Anyone read 'Holy Fuckin' Matrimony'? Worth a look?

  18. Read "Grim Night"... Had me until about 80 pages in, then i just wanted it to end already. I hope they didn't pay american dollars for this thing... Even though the $ is worth nothing nowadays... No but seriously, this could make a semi-decent film... ergh...i guess.

I thought they were gonna at least tie the girl in -- she's 15 -- this started 15 years ago. the mark, etc... but no... Nothing intelligent or thoughtfully planned. Just pure randomness for the last 30 pages.

just finished it... Right there with you. All good setup/ action etc... (except the dialogue with family was pretty wretched - but easily fixed) then last act... Ummmmm felt like a bad Nightmare on Elm Street sequel with all the sudden and random bending of reality. And the end? Okay... Whatev

  20. Best Pilot for 2012 you've read so far? Tell me? I read Graceland and it was okay... felt like a dated 90's TNT show. Wexler's Pilot for TBS was funny and Forty by Doug Elin was just okay... but nothing has popped yet for me... read up to 10 pages of others and they seemed flat. Anybody got one or more they love?

    1. LeftyJones

      LeftyJones

@Mikey P -- agree re: Graceland. Very 90s. But don't knock it to TNT... This is like USA net's original identity. Remember Silk Stalkings, Pacific Blue? And Eastin writes a lot of annoying little asides that make me want to slap him.

  21. Can anyone recommend paying for imdbpro?

Meant to add -- and no follow up b.s. emails or pestering or anything like some "free trial" sites.

The two week free trial really is free. Yes you have to give credit card info -- but I did it. Scoped it out, then cancelled no problem. So you can check it to see if it works for you.

  23. what's the shortest feature script u've ever read or heard about???

    1. LeftyJones

      LeftyJones

Sofia Coppola writes way short -- Read a draft of "Somewhere" that was 40 something pages... "Lost in Translation" was maybe 70ish. Cronenberg's "Crash" was in the 60s or 70s.

  24. So my friend at work is a good buddy of a producer of one of the animation domination toons. He asked him if I could submit a spec for the show, the reply was that they dont read specs of their shows, only original pilots...

    1. LeftyJones

      LeftyJones

Exceptions to the above? Very very few... However -- In the 90s, the various Star Trek shows did actually accept specs of their own. That's how Bryan Fuller started his career.

    1. LeftyJones

Reason 2: Legal... You submit a spec to a show. Now whatever's in your script, they can never do an episode or character beat like that for fear of being sued for theft. And let's face it, there's only so many stories. You send a spec about a dead hooker at the MGM... And they've already got one about a dead hooker at Mandalay ready to shoot -- oops. Now they have to dump the ep they already wrote. It's easier just to have a blanket policy of not reading their own.
