  1. Just watched the first episode of "Unsolved: The Murders of Tupac and The Notorious B.I.G." I'm in for the rest. Anyone else?

Personally thought this was terrible. They tried to replacate FX's "People Vs. OJ" and failed miserably, in my opinion. Bad writing, bad acting.

  2. Looking for a good comedy feature to read. Any recs?

"Murder Me" by David Luz is the best comedy I've read in a good while. Did it ever sell?

  3. How surprising is this: "Jackie" has only grossed $13M and is now in RedBox, so I assume that means they don't expect to see more. I know the script was heavily praised when it first went out. On Rotten Tomatoes, 89% Critic score, 64% Audience. I tend to side with the audience meter more often than not. Discuss.

A biopic that covers her life starting with the day Jack died and going through the next few years would actually have been of great interest and covered new ground. As you state, we've seen THIS version/era of Jackie O. ad nauseam. I ended up feeling the same way about this as I did the recent James Brown and Hank Williams biopics. Very poor writing and structure but so well made and visually stunning that if you turned the volume off you'd think you were watching an incredible film.

Basically everyone who gets a good review loves the service and everyone who gets a bad review hates it.

  5. Fun Fact: If you ever go on Done Deal Pro, the Forum with the most eyeballs is always Agents, Lawyers & Managers. People want to look for easy answers outside of themselves.

That forum is nothing but whiners complaining about not being able to break in. This forum is the most nourishing place I've found yet. None of the negativity of that hell hole.

  6. Good Lord, I can't wait until the Black List comes out so I can read something interesting... It's dry as the Sahara out here...

  7. Thank you to whomever recommended Ashish Mehta's services as a script reader. I forget who recommended him a few weeks ago but he's a great asset and very affordable to boot.

That was me. Ashish, I'll take my kickback now please! ; )

  8. I'm sure I'm in the minority here and will probably get crucified for this, but I honestly do not get the hype for Stranger Things. It seems like the more people hype a show up all over social media the more let down I am by it when I finally get around to watching. Props to the writers for getting it going but I just was not engaged. Discuss.

  9. I know everyone is different and everyone has their go-to coverage analyst, but I really wanted to show some love for www.scriptexaminer.com. I have used everyone from Black List to TB and several independents and Ashish coverage is THE best out there for the money. My last round of coverage resulted in 3 thorough pages of notes and I can't say it wasn't his suggestions that got my script in the shape it needed to be in to land me a manager. Just a friendly tip to those in need.

Btw, I am by no means dogging TB's coverage. They remain the finest true studio coverage on the market and I will continue to use them for all scripts once I'm to that point. Just wanted to recognize Ashish for being the finest 'budget' coverage I've seen.

From what I can tell he is well versed in all genre's. But you could always contact him and see.

  11. There's a widely accepted structural perimeter, or axiom in screenwriting that generally insists on character arc. "In what ways is your character different in the end from in the beginning?" Consider Anton Chigurh in No Country For Old Men and Daniel Plainview in There Will Be Blood. I see no arc in who they are as people/characters. Yes, the story itself has an arc, but how are either of these characters different in the end from the beginning? Other examples of such?

But he's the exact same cunt in the end. If not bigger. That's my point.

Scott, thank you. This was meant as a conversation piece, not a cry for feedback on a current project. I was simply curious of other instances of characters who don't change yet drive a film well.

  13. Does anyone have any history / experience with the Emerging Screenwriters competition they'd like to share?

  14. Could use help from someone who actually knows and has done it, how to properly print from the index card feature on Final Draft. I am in the index card summary mode (two across) and can see all my cards, but when I print preview (or print) I see nothing.

    1. sometimeaftertwoam

      sometimeaftertwoam

Unfortunately when I "Save as PDF", even though I am in the Summary mode where I can read all scene headings and all summary text, it saves the file in "Normal view" where only the headers are shown on the PDF. I am looking to save these in actual note card size so I can print the note cards. Immensely frustrating.

  17. Hey guys. Got a bunch of A-list agents waiting for the english version of my script before a fortnight. Any advice on whom would be best to fast track typos corrections of 110 pages in about two days?

  18. So uh, yeah. Van Halen, man. Only in L.A. :)

For further comparison of the publics interest in real Van Halen, see the above mentioned Louisville, Kentucky date, then find the numbers for the bands return to that same city with the correct singer: 2/18/2012 KFC Yum! Center Louisville, KY 17048 of 17048 (100%) for a gross of $1,544,983.00. (The above mentioned date with Hagar grossed $327,979.00)

By the way, the 2004 "reunion" with Sammy Hagar played 80 dates, not 50. Those 80 dates grossed $50 Million. Only 3 years later, Van Halen's tour with Roth played only 76 dates and grossed $93 Million.

It doesn't matter how much the tour grossed. When you can only sell 50% capacity, that's half what the promoters (LiveNation) needed. If a film grosses $300 Million but cost $500 Million to make, that's bad. 6/6/2004 The Kentucky Expo Center Louisville, KY 6146 of 15023 seats sold (41%), 6/14/2004 First Niagara Center Buffalo, NY 7596 of 15573 (49%), 7/25/2004 Van Halen Chesapeake Energy Arena Oklahoma City, OK 8294 of 15744 (53%). There are countless others.

Clive: Bottom line is the public wants Dave Halen, NOT Van Hagar. They had their "reunion" with Hagar in 2004 and Live Nation lost $8 Million. Hardly any shows sold out if any. Since reuniting with Dave they've entered many major markets 3, 4, 5 times and continuously sold out. Chicago, Philly, LA, NYC, Boston, they routinely do 2 night stands and have since 2007. These are venues that didn't sell out ONE night with Hagar. And people keep coming. Over and over.

With Dave Van Halen only got bigger. With Sammy, Van Halen only got smaller.

  23. Question for those who read scripts on Kindle. Some scripts will hold my page on the Kindle, and some won't. I either download scripts directly from the tracking board on the device, I have them emailed to my email account by someone, or I email them directly to the Kindle using my @kindle.com email address. So why do some scripts save my place and others start back from page 1 every time I reload?

    1. sometimeaftertwoam

      sometimeaftertwoam

There are non scanned one's that do this as well. I was actually looking for someone who could provide a specific, educated answer on why this does this. That doesn't appear to be you.

Sorkin's JOBS starts over anytime I close and reopen it. Other scripts acquired the same way do not, some of which haven't been opened in months.
