It's just a fantastic piece of writing. Everything is a setup that pays off later. Darabont picks us (and Andy Dufresne) up and then beats us back down, over and over, yet we don't see it coming because every beat is a surprise. Red's VO enhances so many scenes (especially the midpoint with Andy playing the opera over the prison p.a. system) rather than commenting on them or explaining them. Here's our detailed Story Map for whoever's interested: http://actfourscreenplays....

I have to admit that the new traler for Monsters University looks pretty great. I'm not a fan of Pixar doing sequels, but this one looks leagues ahead of Cars II just based on the trailer.

As a lover of "The Prestige," my immediate reaction is to hate Now You See Me.

Ever heard this line before in regards to a handgun? "There's twelve in the clip and one in the throat." Raylan said it on Justified, and I've NEVER heard that "throat" reference before, wonder if it comes from Elmore Leonard or a wholly original term from the show writers?

I thought it was a great season, especially loved Patton Oswalt's Constable Bob, but I kind of lost interest (and forgot why it was so important) in the hunt for Drew Thompson. The urgency and momentum slowed a bit, you know, and they kept recycling the scene of one bad guy betraying another bad guy, leading to a stand-off. Maybe they just had one too many criminal factions? And the accents are wearing on me, which is why I think they should set it outside Kentucky next season.

Last day at work before embarking warily on a career as a full-time writer. Tomorrow is, literally, the first day of the rest of my life.

Way back in Lethal Weapon 1 or 2 they said "16 in the clip and one in the pipe," which probably kicked it all off. But I was excited because I love it when a writer comes up with a new way to phrase something we've heard said a million times, and on Justified that happens a lot, maybe due most of the time to Leonard's source material. But in general, Justified is a really underrated show, although I think they need to get Raylan out of Harlan County next season -- send him bac...

Hey guys. Could use your help rewiring my thought process. I have always had this fear that if I don't watch alot of TV and Movies all the time, that I will get stale in writing. Yet when I get busy that means I have to allow for writing and watching. I think in these instances I should focus more on the writing, but then I fear my writing will suffer? Thoughts? Wisdom?

Watching too much TV and current movies can also make you lazy. I notice how the same joke or hip term gets recycled on sitcoms all the time. Last week on New Girl Jake walked in the room and said "My dad died." I can think of multiple other instances of that lazy plot point and line of dialogue in other shows/movies.

Focus on your writing -- turn off the TV. I wish I could follow that advice more, but I try my best. It has helped a lot to have "cut the cord" of our cable. I still follow a good deal of shows, but I watch a lot less frivolous crap because I don't have a DVR and channel surfing doesn't really apply to streaming content. There's a lot less "Oh, X-Men 3 is on FX, I REALLY should see how Act Three plays out!" :-0

On this day in 33 A.D., the Romans tortured God's son to death. That's why they had to change their name to "Italians." Wakka wakka wakka.

Pain & Gain -- Can't wait for tracking numbers on this one. Looking very "Hangover"-esque. $25M budget w/ lots of back-end for talent. Can it open to $45M in the U.S.? I think so.

Pitch Black and Chron of Riddick made $168 mil total WORLDWIDE and yet they're making a third movie? Do dvd sets of trilogies really do that much business? What's the business plan here?

How do you write a backwards script like Memento or Peppermint Candy? Do you write it in reverse order and then just reorder the scenes, or try and write it backwards to begin with?

man, i dreamt last night i read in the paper that bill watterson had started developing a biopic of himself with a studio, and my manager told me to just forget about my own spec and move on to the next one. it was the most horrible dream i've had in a while.

Did anyone see Stoker? How was it?

Is anyone else unable to add House of Cards to your Netflix queue? It's there on the home page to stream, but there's no button to add to queue. Odd.

Just watched the teaser super bowl trailer for Iron Man 3. Most of the footage has been seen before. But noticed in the split-second of the Mandarin's attack on Stark's home, is shown from another angle and Rebecca Hall's character is also there, standing just behind Stark and Peppa, running away as they are propelled through the air. She wasn't even glimpsed in that scene in the original trailer.

Dudes, seriously watch The Americans tonight and tell me if I'm wrong that it has huge potential.
