  1. Does anyone know how to find the official copyright holder of a movie, for listing in a book? For example, Nolan's films are often productions from Syncopy, Legendary and a major studio or two (The Prestige also has Touchstone and NewMarket Films in there). Imdb and wikipedia are not clear. Lil' help?

    1. sbbn

      sbbn

Not to be difficult but that really depends. Copyright is often referred to as a "bundle of rights" (or some shit like that - law school was a few years back)... the point being that there are different rights owned for different things. Rights for derivative works, rights of distribution (and frequently to different regions) and who owns what varies from film to film. Your best bet, honestly, is to call up the studio that released whatever film and ask their legal department. If...

  2. Does anyone know if more Black List scripts come out later in the year, rather than earlier? A la most Oscar nominees.

    1. ThaVillain

      ThaVillain

I'd venture a guess that yes, more BL scripts are from later in the year. But that's because those scripts are fresher on the minds of voters who've read hundreds of scripts over the course of a year.

Then again, I have no hard evidence to back this up. So take it with a grain of salt.

    2. LeftyJones

      LeftyJones

The converse is sometimes true too. You always get a couple high up that didn't necessarily make a splash as specs, because they were quietly set up but then over a period of months passed from person to person until their presence was just ubiquitous. So I'd say it tends to be a mixed bag.

I also know someone who was baffled to be on the list last year because his script was three years old. And wasn't actively submitted anywhere. But just enough voters saw it so...

    3. storymaps99

      storymaps99

So a script that comes out in Oct, Nov or maybe even Dec has a chance to place on the list?

  3. Does anyone wonder if Spielberg didn't really direct War Horse, or at least he shot it *really fast?* It just seemed like they settled for the first take on most shots, very stiffly directed in every way, IMHO.

      reecejones

I think they shot it in 88 days or something, so a lot less than he's used to. Also I think he was going for a 'Golden Age of Hollywood' look and feel.

  4. Dudes, seriously watch The Americans tonight and tell me if I'm wrong that it has huge potential.

I think it has potential. Any show whose foundation is about living a lie is usually compelling. BUT -- those flashback scenes were HORRIBLE. At least make your characters look 20 years younger. ;p

I watched about 7 minutes of it and then realized the pilot was an hour and a half and change long and said, I'm outta here... My patience is that of a chimpanzee on cocaine.

  6. Glenn Mazzara's out on The Walking Dead, anyone know the deets? He asked for Matt Weiner money and they told him to hit the road? That would be ironic, considering that TWD will make 10 times the profit that Mad Men will over the next 20 years.

The Killing should have just ended last season. I really don't know what the hell they are going to do with it now. Veena Sud really F'ed up a show that had promise.

Based on AMC's track record with hiring new talent for their shows, the replacement will not be a good one. They hired the guy from Falling Skies to do Hell on Wheels season 3. Falling Skies was a mess and whoever was showrunner needed to be fired, not hired for another series. AMC has been making a lot of questionable calls (esp. in regards to the Killing) to the point where their brand is starting to erode. With Breaking Bad gone after this season and Mad Men the season after this (?),...

Mazzara's one of the best guys I have ever worked with or for before in my career and I know that no matter what, he'll land on his feet and march on. The comment above about him being hired because he was cheap and bottom of the barrel is wrong. He helped helm "The Shield" which was an amazing show and has done other incredible shows before and after that. TWD has had a HUGE pile of turnover from the very first season on...this is just par for the course. Remember the gre...

Took a little while to wind itself up to full MAD MEN buzz - but it got there, and everything paid off nicely by the end. Excited to see what comes next.

  9. Happy Endings is such a great show. There's so much to it that's not in the script -- the direction, the editing, the shot selection, timing, etc. Who is the creative team and what have they done prior?

    1. storymaps99

      storymaps99

They're doing a great job. The pace is so fast, with so many unique reaction shots and bits of business to catch, that it must be very complicated to shoot and edit, but they pull it off. How about the actress who plays Jane, where did she come from? She's hilarious.

I agree the show does not get enough credit, I think because ABC has terrible comedies that it gets sucked down the tubes... Anyway the flow reminds me of scrubs everytime I watch it

  15. How does weekend tracking work? Where/how do they poll people and gauge this information? I've never been asked at a movie theater if I was aware of an upcoming movie. As we all know, the tracking is often wrong, but it's usually pretty darn accurate so...pull back the curtain, please?

It's all about comparisons and keeping a straight face when you guess wrong.

The pre-release numbers come from data gathered from focus groups and/or test screenings. Sometimes your focus group is a bunch a people in a room or sometimes they're online or polled over the phone. Who they are reflects what you want to find out -- age, geography, income, whatever.

From the groups you end up with data on movie awareness, how good your advertising was and demographic ...

reaction to the film. You then take all the data, ticket pre-sales and compare it to how similar films opened. Then you guess.

Once the tickets start selling on Friday you get more data and you compare it to past releases to try to figure out Saturday and Sunday.

      ... who are those guys?

I think Cars 2 wasn't up to par because Cars wasn't up to par. Look at Toy Story. Two sequels, and they were both strong.

      benskelly2

I really enjoyed CARS - I just don't think that world could sustain a sequel. Anyway, it just didn't work. I'm hoping their dinosaur and brain movies are great originals.

    3. storymaps99

      storymaps99

They tried to sell Cars 2 as a passion piece because John Lasetter is supposedly so into cars, but we all know it was about merchandising. On a Disney stockholders call, the CEO said that Cars merch had outsold Star Wars merch. Insane.

  17. I hope you're all having wonderful holidays and I wish you a hugely successful 2012! Let's make great screenplays and movies, people.

  18. I think Fincher will win Best Director for Dragon Tattoo but there's no way the film can win Best Picture. Speaking of, does anyone know what's the deal with the title sequence in the film? It felt totally removed from the story, whereas the iconic titles in "Seven" were directly related to the story (John Doe constructing one of his journals).

Thanks for the link, SciFiGuy, which includes a video embed of the full sequence. For the record, I'm fine with the IDEA of a title sequence like that -- not only is it a trademark of Fincher's style but if a Bond film can do it, why not another? And it's an incredible sequence, technically, and as a stand-alone piece of art -- but I'm still not sold on it adding to the story and establishing the tone of the movie -- when we come out of it, we've got what is essentially a ...

...what is essentially a standard Act One at a normal pace (for lack of a better term). But it's already growing on me, having seen it twice now, I must say. Ultimately, I admire its boldness and it is a part of the film, for better or worse, so should be considered in any future analysis, I suppose.

I believe The Dark Knight is in fact two 1 hour and Twenty Minute Movies... there are two mini movies that are all linked together by the common thread/theme of sacrifice. Bruce Wayne/Batman sacrifices his life/company/family/friends for the city. Even Bruce Wayne sacrifices his Lambo to save the guy who was going to turn him in/expose him. The joker was sacrificing his life and money to prove he was the best. Even the prisoners on the boat had to make a choice as to who was going to sacri...

Jaco: Nope, not doing it (like it does for every other title). It must be intentional on their part, but I can't imagine why. Maybe once you play it, it will keep it at the top of your queue or something, or maybe there will be a separate tab for it? But I don't see anything like that now.
