  1. This is 40: Agree it's too long, but the big problem for me is that it's just NOT FUNNY. Sorry, but Apatow's style is just played out. If this exact same movie had come out in 2007, I would have been laughing uproariously. You gotta know when to move on.

I enjoyed it more than I thought I would, but I think he ruins the nice feeling of the ending by tacking on the outtakes of Melissa McCarthy raging and swearing in a not particularly funny way. He can't let go of that comedy sketch mentality.

Just watched it. Yeah, I laughed a few times. Especially at some of the stuff Rudd said. Still a pass, but I did laugh.

It had some laughs, of course, just...not enough. And too much reliance on improv. I took classes at the UCB Theater in NYC years ago, so I've watched a number of people come up and noticed the influence of improv on tv and features and it's getting out of hand, IMHO. I notice now most of the "tags" on the ends of sitcoms are just actors improv'ing and it often pulls me out because it's not natural to the character or the logic of the show. I get the sense that the sho...

  2. This Woody Allen documentary is fantastic. Streaming it on Netflix. Part 1 goes into a lot of detail about his writing evolution.

Love And Death is my favorite of his old comedies - holds up the best I think. Other favorites of mine that get overlooked: Radio Days and Zelig.

      ... who are those guys?

Broadway Danny Rose is on Netflix streaming. It's one of his most overlooked and one of my personal favorites.

  3. Watched the season five opener of Breaking Bad -- holy shit, it's coming back harder then ever! Incredible. And I might just be persuaded to share the streaming login for a 24-48 hour window if someone has something awesome to swap? :-)

I'm looking for interviews for my blog with working writers, directors and producers, and of course any hot screeners you might have. Message me and I'll shoot you my email.

...what supernatural powers? It's deduction and imagination. Not exactly superpowers in our business.

Those sequences where he becomes the killer and "relives" the murder have a big supernatural vibe to them. And he woke up wandering on a highway in one scene, which really gave it a supernatural vibe. If that's not the case and it's just supposed to be his intuition, sorry but I think it's overproduced nonsense. Not to mention grisly because not only do we see the aftermath with the hacked bodies, but then we get to relive the murders from the POV of the killer! Yuck.

  5. What's the buzz on "GRIMM?" I hope they focus on the +1 numbers on it as I have a feeling a few people will be watching the World Series. ;-)

  6. What's the buzz on "OZ?" Think it's a hit or a debacle?

  7. When is staffing season for TV writers? Is it realistic for a new writer who just got a manager and only has samples to be in the running for jobs?

  8. Why does the Cap America costume in The Avengers look so cheap now? http://tinyurl.com/3snczxj

I think it's the colors, they're too bright and cartoony, even more so than in the comic book. The costume in the Cap America movie was much more realistic and edgy looking which added to the "realism."

I agree the colors look way too bright. However, I guess it depends what type of lighting and filters they're using. Maybe it will look okay when it hits the screen.

Cookiemonster: that's what I'm hoping, too. It looks like felt in person, but on screen hopefully it looks more substantial. Otherwise, I've got my knight costume from third grade to sell to the Arthur and Lancelot folks. ;-)

  9. Why has the new Star Trek not beat the first one's opening weekend, even with 3D and Imax premiums and an 87% critics rating? It had the best trailer of the year. (No spoilers!)

I'm with palostick. Like a painting in which construction lines underlie the finished product, I might not have minded all the hamfisted generic action tropes if they'd bothered to erase the construction lines before releasing the film. It looked more like a blueprint than a movie.

it's so quaint that some people here think that the quality of a film has anything to do with it's opening weekend numbers.

Unreal. In the best possible way. I love seeing a show that does't bleed viewers over time but instead continues to increase.

Guillermo Del Toro's The Strain on FX will hopefully bring another quality entry to the genre and could easily pick up this audience. I just finished the first book in the trilogy and if they put enough money into it, it will be the next The Walking Dead.

  11. You know what looks good about 1600 Penn? Absolutely nothing.

  12. You realize Nolan is just toying with us? Every review of TDKR uses words like "EPIC, MONSTROUS, INCREDIBLY AMBITIOUS, HUGE, SPECTACLE. I was worried that I'd seen too much footage, but it's clear he's holding back. We have no idea what he has in store for us. Can't believe only a few more days until Thursday night midnight, baby!!!

I was actually found the making of the Dark Knight Trilogy today in a book shop and sat down and start reading. Very nicely done(from what I read). The script part where The Nolans and Goyer described their process of writing and choosing the charaters is very interesting. And that Levitt's John Blake is actually an orphan, who Gordon took under his wing. They aimed for Wayne, Bane and Blake to have a link to each other. So, it begs the question: Does this make him a replacement for Wayne...
