  1. If a magician entertains everyone in his audience that isn’t a magician... and said magicians say the show sucked... did it REALLY suck? Or did the magicians’ overawareness of how the tricks are done cloud their ability to sit back and enjoy the show?

Audience ALWAYS matters. That’s the point =) We all start out as laymen, and hopefully become experts, but it’s important to not lose sight that the audience is still mainly comprised of laymen. And most laymen are gonna hate an experts’ grade A. It’s why millions of people are entertained in spite of an expert’s complaints. Laymen aren’t stupid. They just aren’t interested in finding out how the trick is done.

... consumers -- but the majority of people ARE consumers. There’s no magic if everyone in the audience is a magician.

Well said, Mike, though I would take issue with referring to CSI’s audience as dullards. They’re entertained by great storytelling – not because they’re stupid. Every screenwriter was inspired to write by other writers / movies BEFORE they learned how stories work. It is fascinating to me how perception changes when laymen transition to experts. Movies aren’t made for other storytellers (experts). Their made for people that want to be told stories to (laymen). Yes, producers are still consume...

Yes, well done  Individual tastes of audience members will of course vary in terms of what constitutes a good show... but the bulk of the audience – say 80% -- does not know how the tricks are done. This 80% is the magician’s target audience. My comment concerns the other 20% -- the established magicians, aspiring magicians, and failed magicians-turned-critics... who might struggle to appreciate a flawlessly executed show that entertained the majority of the magician’s target audience.

Flawed garbage, like test screenings. Average moviegoer doesn’t analyze a film after they exit, especially if they enjoyed it. People have been searching for ways to beat the stock market for years. There’s no free lunch in that. Same deal with movies. Con men loveth a sucker.

  5. Why has the new Star Trek not beat the first one's opening weekend, even with 3D and Imax premiums and an 87% critics rating? It had the best trailer of the year. (No spoilers!)

I liked it. Not as good as the first but I still thought it was rock solid entertainment.

  8. Watching the herring run on Cape Cod. Poor bastards have to fight the current, swim UP waterfalls, all while avoiding poaching seagulls. But the reward is sweet: when they make it to the top they get their spawn on like its nobody's business.

  9. wait a sec... Dimension dumped AFTERSHOCK on 110 screens? seriously?
