It's not only that Walt led a double life of crime, it's not just that walt used Hank, it's not just that Hank trusted Walt with information sensitive to his case, his obsession, even bringing Walt in on it to help Hank catch Gus, it's not just that Walt purposefully put his life in danger (at least once, in Hank's estimation, when Walt crashed the car head on) but when caught, Walt told him to basically "watch...

... "watch out." With these two previously established fragile egos faciing off, the only way things could escalate was to all out war.
