  1. Any DSLR cinematographers out there who can recommend some good, affordable old SLR lenses which would be good for a Canon T3i? Models and personal recs would be greatly appreciated.

What's your budget? I use 1970's Nikon lenses and found some great deals on eBay (for 24mm, 50mm, and 135mm).

Budget is around 800. I've got some wide angle, now I'm looking into telescopic/zoom lenses.

I would definitely check out ebay or keh.com. You should be able to get yourself an 85mm f/1.8 and a 135mm f/2 and still have a little left over.

  2. Hannibal Season 2 might be the greatest piece of television I have ever seen. That finale, while slow at times, builds to the most emotionally devastating set piece to air on television.

it was great! And that post credits reveal...WTF?!?!?!?! Hannibal HAS to be the best show on broadcast tv and most definitely up there with the top cable shows on now.

  3. I've said it before, I'll say it again: marketing needs to be completely overhauled in this game. How on earth did we slide back to cheesily narrated trailers? -

dsjones - you are correct but more than that, just become something is similar doesn't make it a copyright violation. Among the numerous examples, look at the atrocious film Mac and Me.

Interestingly enough, I remember reading the pilot and feeling underwhelmed.

There was a scene in the pilot script where Hannibal approaches a teenage girl smoking a cigarette. We then cut to him pounding lung tissue in his kitchen, he samples the meat then says "pre-smoked".

Hannibal with one-liners? I was afraid the series was going to be kind of a joke with lines like that but I'm glad to see they cut things like that from the show as it's definitely...

...I don't remember that scene in the script I read. But then again it was a while ago. That said, Hannibal has an insane amount of cannibalism puns. It's like he wants to get caught... (cue feral fight scene).

I knew about the British rooftop scene, but they fooled me by doing it in the first episode. In any case, it had a very visceral shock effect. Loved the speech to the mirror at the end too, after 'ignoring' us the whole episode. I'm not going to binge, I'm going to savor.

Had mixed feelings about the subway scene (too State of Play) but it left my roommate and I in shock once we realized it wasn't some sort of dream sequence. Very well done to play it straight. Overall, season 2 is a fucking masterpiece.

Does anyone really read any mainstream comics these days? And I'm sorry, but the idea of reading "digital comics" online holds no desire from me... Only the Fantagraphics type stuff is interesting. Ahh, I remember when an afternoon of hustlin' deposit money on pop bottles with a buddy could yield an inch high stack of comic books and a few candy bars. A true cliffhanger? Psspt! More likely some stunt with a character's sexuality or whatever's the "new"...

I agree, Foz. And that Best Man speech felt utterly interminable. That's what I mean about these episodes being too long. The character stuff is drawn out and the mystery is rushed. Did like the very ending and the use of "Oh What A Night".

  13. AVClub: "Seen on a traditional movie screen, Gravity looks like a near triumph, compromised just slightly by the tidiness of its dramatic trajectory. Stretch the film across a bigger canvas, however, and those flaws become tiny specks, dwarfed by the enormity of Cuarón’s aesthetic achievement."

    3. dsjones

      dsjones

whoarethoseguys: I watched Children of Earth before Series 1 and 2 - no foreknowledge required as it's pretty easy to figure out the relationships. Bits of information you should know going in: The lead, Captain Jack, is immortal. Torchwood is a (poorly kept) secret government program tasked with eliminating alien threats. That's all you need to know. That said, it rewards fans with little nods to the first two series.

  15. GOTHAM: A Batman show without the Batman. Intriguing idea, but they've got so much going against them right now it seems silly to even attempt.

Also, I think Gotham could theoretically work. Batman wasn't awesome because it was Batman; Batman was awesome because of the villains. It's an interesting idea to place the villains, who really only have an equal in Batman in a scenario where there is no Batman. Give them the upper-hand by a long stretch.

i'm not giving him a pass, i'm saying he did BUFFY and ANGEL. and yes, FIREFLY and DOLL HOUSE, neither of which I watched all of. still... I have more faith than not.

    4. dsjones

      dsjones

The only star wars prequels that are canon are the ones i've outlined in my mind. I'll say this: the villains are interesting, but a response to Batman's presence. He's the light that draws the insects out at night. This series would probably just focus on the deterioration of Gordon's faith and principles while seeing the blatant corruption going on around the city...which could really just be any cop show. I want a reason for this to be set in the Batman universe, even i...

  18. Breaking Bad's final two episodes are 75 minutes each. So I'm betting 5 extra minutes of story, 10 extra minutes of commercials? Hope AMC's making a pretty penny off those ad sales.

Sorry, trying to be low-key about it. I'm sure BB will be worth all the commercials. The DVD sets are the way to watch this series anyway, as we all know.

  19. James Cameron isn't lying when he says that Gravity is the best space film ever made. Simple plot, lean and effective - nice use of theme, music's intense and it's a nail biter. But the visuals, my god. Several members of the audience who partook of herb were freaking out. I can't imagine what they saw but what I saw was beautiful.

If it's a 2 story IMAX screen? Yes, see it in IMAX. I saw it in regular but have seen enough films in regular and IMAX (you're welcome WB) to compare: the film's amazing in regular but the sheer addition of scale will make it a more immersive experience. You will feel engulfed by space. My vote: IMAX 3D. (oh and snag me a poster or three if you do the midnight showing.)

Axalon: it was the kinda heavy handed story I wrote in Screenwriting 101 in college. It was cringeworthy to see on screen. Two editors and they weren't able to figure out that it was cancer to the story? Just start with them as children, get all that out of the way at the start, then jump to how it all went wrong - then one really quick flashback montage (of everything we've seen right as "destiny" is achieved). He was struggling with this story and getting all the pieces and...
