  1. Hey guys. Could use your help rewiring my thought process. I have always had this fear that if I don't watch alot of TV and Movies all the time, that I will get stale in writing. Yet when I get busy that means I have to allow for writing and watching. I think in these instances I should focus more on the writing, but then I fear my writing will suffer? Thoughts? Wisdom?

Also, stealing from novels is much easier and less noticeable. I am cannibalizing the fuck out of Raymond Chandler and I know that 90% of Hollywood won't notice. ;-)

  2. Need help: Can anyone tell me of a movie or tv episode scene where a judge has had to pass down a maximum sentence even when he or she didn't want to because that is what the law requires. Need some reference for a scene I'm writing.

dsjones in fact the judge is the center of this. Im trying tp pull of a sort of irony that will connect in the coming scene.

  3. Any recommendations on a books or website that helps with the modern day blueprint of screenplays. I used to write comedies, but have transitioned to TV Dramas. However I have a drama Idea for a feature and would like to get reacquainted with screenplay structure as it looks today.

In my little world, I tend to believe books about structure are great if you're writing a grad paper but not so great for anything else. Beginning, middle, end. Everything else is that slog of a journey you have to figure out yourself and the best light is finding what you enjoyed (movies/books) and then struggling to figure out what it was that worked so well for *you.* Of course, there is a million-dollar industry that disagrees with me so I'll leave it to the masses to tear my w...

Government. Everyone's complacent so your work is rarely ever expected on time. And it's so easy that you can knock it out of the park in a few hours, casually have it trickle in during the rest of the day while spending most of your time writing/outlining. plus you can get a pension, which is cool.

    3. SilverFox

      SilverFox

It's crazy how scripts are on lock down. QT films and Deadpool prove it doesn't affect box office. It's reading Harry Potter books before watching the films. One could argue, especially in my case, reading scripts makes me want to see a movie more!

    4. andrewpwoodberry

      andrewpwoodberry

Deadpool was leaked by the writers on purpose, so not a great example. I think the bigger fear is negative buzz -- like with Aloha, well ahead of release, due to the Sony hack. If a script is still under development and gets out there, it could slow development process.

  16. Whats everyone's thinking on FOX abandoning Pilot Season (If it in fact happens)? I realize it might possibly lead to more quality, but will it come at the cost of less stories being bought and there for less writing opportunities?

    2. admin

      admin

Honestly, I think the immediate impact is felt, but within a year the new design will still have the same amount of sales & projects in development.

    3. typistolero

      typistolero

They probably aren't abandoning pilot season as much as spreading it out a little. Reilly says something like this every year, but the fact is they still need to participate in the upfronts with everyone else and lock in their ad sales.

    4. admin

      admin

yep. until everyone goes the way (that truthfully TV is going) up fronts & ads will dictate their "seasons".

      Michael L

I'd recommend. I liked. I'm still thinking about things a week later (in a good way). That said, I have some questions, and there were things I maybe wasn't loving, but not to the excoriating extent many in the press seem to have not been loving. Or the dude next to my table in the Thai restaurant. Who was not loving rather loudly.

    3. Corsairs

      Corsairs

Let me add my recommendation. McCarthy breaks all the screenwriting rules, but he can get away with it because he's Cormac McCarthy. He makes big blocks of dialogue crackle with life, where other writers would bring the show to a grinding halt. You'll be so engrossed in the interesting characters that you won't notice that they aren't doing much.

    4. Zmanx

      Zmanx

Yes. It is being crucified in the press but time will judge it much more graciously.

I was talking about Gotham with a friend and lamenting how if it were done on HBO, FX or basically any non-broadcast network it would have been SO much better. Such a great concept, almost there, but...it's Fox. Frustrating.

Read the script a while back, a refreshing non-linear structure but a little slow on the story. Deep characters with a lot to show as well as some really nicely crafted scenes.

  20. I know you hated it Jiblings. Characters were thin and it was riddled with cliches and plot holes, but even then, movie theaters were made for Jurassic World. True Blockbuster. Took me back to the 90s.

    1. aphid47

      aphid47

I feel like in the 90's the stories were at least there. Terminator 2 had great FX, but also a decent story. This is why I don't go see these kinds of movies anymore. No heart.

    2. axalon

    1. sbbn

      sbbn

Everyone raves that it's great for reading screenplays BUT BUT BUT I would wait if I were you because rumor is they are coming out with iPad mini 2 later this year, significantly upgraded display and supposedly a hefty price cut. I'm going to pick up the iPad mini but I'm waiting until 2 comes out.

Or you can wait for new iPad to come out to get current iPad for cheaper (refurbished). Either way might be good idea to wait for new models to hit. Mini too small for me but as sbbn says others love it.

"To access the 2016 Young & Hungry List, click the red links below. The 2016 Young & Hungry List comes in two flavors: Young & Hungry and By The Numbers. The Young & Hungry List contains the information on each writer selected, including projects, bios and rep info."

  24. Im sure everyone is wanting to put their two sense in about this but to me, I don't exactly see the benefit in bringing writers down to so called "reality". We're dreamers. We dream things up every day. And the ones making a living at it are the ones who are too busy writing to worry about whether they will be successful or whether an option is a sale or free.
