  1. Need help: Can anyone tell me of a movie or tv episode scene where a judge has had to pass down a maximum sentence even when he or she didn't want to because that is what the law requires. Need some reference for a scene I'm writing.

co-sign the vote for 'dallas buyers club.' that judge's speech is a great example of exactly what you're talking about.

i thought this was really solid. and while i didn't mind elisabeth moss' accent, i found holly hunter's entire character to be exceedingly annoying.

brilliant episode. also, i love that jennifer getzinger gets to direct all the good episodes now. i worked with her a few times when she was a script supervisor doing low-budget indie features in new york. see people, dreams do come true!

  4. Anyone else think the latest episode of Mad Men was lazy and clunky? Probably my least favorite of the entire series run, and I'm a huge fan.

didn't love it, and really wish they were doing more with the pete and trudy storyline, which feels like their strongest in the early going of the season.

  5. being s bit dumb here, but say im using the word swat in my screenplay. do i always have to use capitals for that word when i use it?

assuming you're referring to a SWAT team then yes, for accuracy's sake, since SWAT is itself an acronym.

writer's groups are tricky. i've been in a few, and the experience can be extremely helpful, but can also quickly devolve into "too many cooks in the kitchen."

  7. Saw "Martha Marcy May Marlene." Severly underwhelmed given the buzz around it. Anyone else see it/think otherwise?

Well, I loved "Winter's Bone", so I'd have to disagree... But it is your pretty standard Sundance flick: weird and unsettling, short on plot, and culminating in an ambiguous and unsatisfying ending.
