Said to be in the vein of "American History X" meets "The Son of Rambow" - a powerful tale of religious zealotry through the eyes of children.

  5. Whenever a new "teenage girl" movie comes out the reviews always begin with "I know I'm not the target audience and I don't understand any of this movie but let me tell you this is awful."

    1. dsjones

      dsjones

the fundamental problem with target audiences - compromising story for what the people in charge assume the target wants.

When it's a YA novel with a built in audience of millions they want to curb the amount of angry letters they get written on hello kitty stationary.

  10. Amazon Studios - where scripts go to die but are resurrected as Kindle graphic novels. Amazon Storyteller can't really be about them making movies can it?

Amazon is a toddler who is swimming out into the deep end without any idea how to swim. Their Zombieland pilot proved that they aren't ready.

I read the entire manifesto thanks to anonymous. I didn't think it was that "poorly written"it came off as way more intelligent than I expected.

It does seem like something ripped right out of a movie.

i admit i saw it too and the makeup/special effects team needs an Oscar for making Jeremy Renner look GOOD AS HELL! Like, seriously! Them folks need a statute cause that was a difficult task they did WELL AT! Gemma was worth it. She wasn't naked but in enough tight, form fitting clothes to make the entire 88 minute film almost bearable...

    3. sangun

      sangun

My girlfriend said of Gemma -- She keeps looking off screen for no reason. Do you think she's looking at her set chair or her driver?

That man could sit in front of a camera and read from the phonebook for 3 hours and I'd pay to watch it (of course, it would be best if he was shirtless at the same time).

Saw it. A friend leaned over and whispered: "It's the equivalent of a 12-year old virgin writing bondage porn". It was pretty posturing.

    3. ThaVillain

      ThaVillain

My DRIVE comparison is in the fact that the marketing for Drive promised Fast and the Furious and packed theaters with moviegoers expecting that, but the result was more of an "art house" film, if you will. Same thing here. A lot of folks went expecting HEAT or MIAMI VICE but instead got something totally different, thus the "F" Cinemascore.

    4. ThaVillain

      ThaVillain

Just looked it up. DRIVE got a "C-" Cinemascore. Not quite an "F" but still, audiences disliked it. It was my favorite movie of 2011. Pretty much everyone I recommended it to (friends, FB, Twitter) hated it. So yeah, I think the analogy applies.

Just IMO, with the "aspiring screenwriting climate" the way it has been as of late, everyone is on the lookout for scams and ripoffs. In the words of Jamie Kennedy, EVERYBODY'S A SUSPECT!

    3. dietgreentea

      dietgreentea

It's hilarious to me how so many people have this notion that, in the writing world, the word "intern" -- which, in this case, barely even applies -- is somehow a powerful incentive…

    4. sangun

      sangun

Either it's a scam and there was a prior relationship that got the person the internship and CAA. Or the company is run by morons who didn't do a background check on someone they were attaching their names to in a press release. Either way.

Logline: A presidential debate gets hijacked by terrorists and it's up to 5 audience members to save the candidates. The theme of the movie is "Don't mess with Jason Statham." Starring Jason Statham, Nic Cage, Jennifer Lawrence, Rosie O'donnel and Christopher Lloyd.
