  1. Imagine a U.S. president who had ten kids and the nightmare that would be for the Secret Service. Sounds like an idea for a movie.

  2. Looking for recommendations for good "chase" flicks. Any suggestions?

  3. Any recs for scripts/films that have kick ass third act set pieces--preferably sci fi thriller or action. Thanks!

  4. Know of any scripts that have a serious tone where one character has a profound admiration for the main character like Shawshank Redemption?

  5. Well, can definitely see why Holland, Michigan was rated so highly on the Black List

  6. Say you have a character who is stuttering. Do you write the dialogue like he's stuttering or do you leave a note and let the actors do their job?

seems like if it's one scene you should spell it out. Check out KING'S SPEECH and see how the writer handled it there. Such a great script.

I would pull out specific words to give a feel for it-- specifically if it's dialogue relevant, but otherwise make a notation and leave that to the director.

  10. What do you think about an inciting incident on pg 16? Is it too late?

that makes sense for that page count. my script is at 109 now. I hope I can trim it down but I don't want to goof up the flow either. This is a dilemma.

this is really helpful -- thank you. seems the inciting needs the prep work. I'm trying to figure a way in that can lose a couple scenes to bring it in at page 12 which is better.

  16. "LOVE" - short I wrote - just won Best Film at Southampton Film Week. Not the Oscars - but still nice cool that the film's out there making its way in the world.

  17. I think I'm using the term PRELAP wrong? I'm using it for a VO that starts before that scene begins. Is that correct?

VO that is not connected to the current scene but is a running mantra in the characters head. Think I'll remove the prelap and just use VO.

  20. for dialogue-- I'm trying to think of a situation where the training is worse/more grueling than the actual thing that's being trained for. Any ideas?

  21. There's a great show I think you should check out - it's called Breaking Bad with the dad from Malcolm in Middle - yeah, I know right. But he's awesome in it. Two episodes into season 3. Looking forward to more… Yeah, I'm late to the party but this show is awesome!

Saw Vince Gilligan speak on a panel at the AFF and his story of pitching Breaking Bad to studio execs was hilarious!
