I have to be the stupid one. I thought Finke was a columnist, was she producing this film or what?

  2. Works in Progress Experiment... I'm gonna try some fun writing sprint exercises in W.I.P. section this weekend. Will go from Idea->Title->Outline->Completed 1st Draft Pilot. Follow along and watch me fail (or succeed).

  3. Favor Request: I just dropped into W-I-P a writing sample I was thinking of using to approach tv lit agents. If you have 10 minutes, can you read and let me know thoughts? Happy to provide feedback on others' projects as well.

I thought your review was very solid. It was hard to anticipate an actual audience existed for light drama + Milo's butt driving Facebook shares + Voice lead-in. Expect imitators this pilot season.

    3. Nic.Lishko

      Nic.Lishko

It's a good show. Cheesey, yes, but quite good. And it massively fills that Parenthood, Friday Night Lights gap

    4. andrewpwoodberry

      andrewpwoodberry

The ability to thematically tie in the flashbacks to present day is a great engine for the show. Lot to be proud of on that writing staff.

There was an indie out of Seattle a few years back with similar premise. Name escapes me but it was at Sundance.

  6. 2014 Hit List Recommendation: Remember by Benjamin August. It's slow and understated, but worth the journey.

      sbbn

Enjoyed it but I was surprised that the gun scene was played for humor and presented so nonchalantly. With all that has gone on in the last few years, that type of things just doesn't feel very funny anymore.

    2. andrewpwoodberry

      andrewpwoodberry

I didn't hate it. But I found some characters to be shallow/cliche & way too much pontificating instead of actual conversations. Would have been interesting to see same concept attempted as half hour comedy. Hour felt too long.

    3. sbbn

      sbbn

@andrewpwoodberry, great comments and I agree with all of them. Especially about some of the characters feeling too cliche and stereotypical.

  10. I'm starting to sound like a TBS flack, but I'm really loving Search Party. This + People of Earth are right in my wheelhouse.

    1. andrewpwoodberry

      andrewpwoodberry

BTW - Show is not for everyone. If you don't like Girls, you might want to stay away from this one.

    2. GlitterKitty

      GlitterKitty

Agreed! Both have sharp writing, great casts, and feel wholly original. (BTW, my BF loathes GIRLS, but SEARCH PARTY is something he's totally in to.)

Kinda sad more people aren't talking about this show. Maybe if it was on Netflix? Or maybe my commercial sensibilities are off (my favorite show from last year was Big Time in Hollywood, FL)

  11. Fall network tv season officially starts today. I'll start a section in chit-chat in case anyone still has a TV that gets those channels.

      andrewpwoodberry

Yeah, I like that show too. I know it's manipulating me, but it does a good job of that. Plus casting is A+ on the show.

    3. andrewpwoodberry

      andrewpwoodberry

I've updated through today. No horrible freshman ratings yet. Only Good Doctor, Young Sheldon have really exceeded though. Typical network season so far in a post-cable world.

  13. There's a lot you can learn about serialized tv writing -- and how important "incident" is -- just by reading this timeline of stuff that's happened on This is Us http://www.vulture.com/2018/01/this-is-us-chronological-timeline.html

  14. Every time someone hits "Reply All" on a TB email, it validates the rest of the country's assertion that Hollywood is full of morons.

Every time you hit "Reply All," Harvey cuts ten minutes from a good film.

Every time you hit "Reply All," JJ Abrams needlessly adds a lens flare to a shot.

  15. Do you get notes saying your dialogue doesn't sound real? Read and learn from transcripts. I'm reading this FBI one of leaker Reality Winner, which is getting turned into an Off-Broadway play soon! https://www.politico.com/f/?id=0000015e-c5e7-ddab-a57f-cfe7d5b50002

    1. andrewpwoodberry

      andrewpwoodberry

BTW - If your notes say you need to work on your action lines... practice with the linked transcript by adding the currently non-existent action lines.

    2. palostick

      palostick

Thanks Andrew, this is brilliant. Plus Reality Winner has got the best name ever for a national security whistleblower...

  16. I'm really enjoying the Off-Screen Podcast. Two intelligent guys summarizing & reviewing some of the most notable spec scripts that have sold in recent years. http://www.ospodcast.com

  17. I wrote a rambling, self-indulgent, reddit-esque post in Chit Chat about why I hate the Hit List and the Black List

    1. andrewpwoodberry

      andrewpwoodberry

And yes, I used a clickbaity title. I hate myself for that. But titles get eyeballs, right?

    2. adlocke

      adlocke

andrew you are the mack daddy pimp for getting married. i do legal and nothing works from what i've learned in screenwriting. sense of a word, forget it. i love the hitlist and blacklist for its praise of storytelling. i don't know where else to find pimp shit.

  18. Any 2015 Hit List/ Black List scripts outside of the Top 10 really good and worth reading? Thanks in advance for suggestions.

    1. andrewpwoodberry

      andrewpwoodberry

Things to love about Black Mirror: strong production design; exploring the intersection of sex, relationships and technology; an always satisfying and retrospectively inevitable conclusion; great musical score

JOJO RABBIT's a nice read. Very sweet and comical dealing with a strange topic.

  23. I'm not sure how this site exists, but this link will take you to transcripts of a ton of current shows: http://transcripts.foreverdreaming.org/

    1. keithdav

      keithdav

I checked out a number of transcripts here and they only had the dialogue (and a few had sfx), but they didn't identify which character is speaking. So not terribly useful.

    2. andrewpwoodberry

      andrewpwoodberry

Yeah, it's a transcript only site. Useful for comedy, not quite as much for drama.

  24. Sorry, Bobby. I put a period at the end. Here is the Top 50 downloaded Black List script w/ correct link: http://files.blcklst.com/top50of2013.pdf

  25. Just started following Modern Family writer Danny Zuker on Twitter (@dannyzuker). He really captures Billy Wilder's stolen quote: "A tip from Lubitsch: Let the audience add up two plus two. They’ll love you forever." Plus he's good with Vine.

    1. andrewpwoodberry

      andrewpwoodberry

Some examples of his where you the reader get to add up 2+2:

I just watched a 15 year old girl who was busy texting walk into a light post and I am no longer an atheist.

The quality of the gifts I get my family when I'm away is proportional to how poorly I behaved. They're all getting cars. #ByeSydney

The most disturbing thing I ever found on my son's computer was an empty history folder.

    2. adlocke

      adlocke

      that looks fun!

im real excited to be coming up with a screenplay. so what if i can't write a novel.

a girl told me she love guys with glasses. she says it makes them look hot. i thought she meant shot glasses. #vision impaired

pregnant teenagers have to decide whether or not to keep or give up their baby at such a young age. that's a huge decision. is it bad that at 39 i still can't decide if i like pepsi or coke better? #save that one for 2026
