  1. App suggestions for screenwriting on iPad? Final Draft and Fade In have weird mobile versions. Looking for a desktop feel. Thx

I personally think most "screenwriting" apps are just bloatware (esp. Final Draft). I just use a basic editor, like Editorial, and write in Fountain. If you're okay with Fountain, you can use pretty much any word processor app.

This doesn't really seem like the type of forum that needs or should have user ratings (especially given how civil this place generally is compared to say... reddit) but eh, whatever, I guess.

It is a rate-each-other system! I had no idea. I must have pissed some people off during my younger, more abrasive days. Or people just think of me as acceptable, neither good nor bad. That's hilarious.

Well, that's disappointing to hear - my three star rating gets me a coupon to "Sad Sundays" at Denny's with the old folks. I can only imagine what suffering the two-star members are enduring.

In all seriousness, what are the stars? WHAT DO THEY MEAN??

What exactly do the stars mean? I've worked mine down to three, on my way to one. That's good, right?

  9. Only a few months late... Boy, were you guys right about The Last Jedi! WTF? Why can't anyone seem to write a smart, fun, exciting Star Wars script anymore?? None of it really makes sense and it's not even half as clever as it should be. Diminishing returns all around.

I know this is cliche enough to almost be trite but I think there is a lot of truth that the story was designed from the outside in, from set-pieces (casino "planet" was one of the starting concepts for the story)to story, rather than the other way around. Reminds me of how Yoda fell apart through the series: he was so memorable because unexpected - the great master who turned out to be small, frail, and seemingly inconsequential. The significance of that was lost, though, when...

The Beaver topped the Black List with that concept years back. Quirky as hell but the writing is brilliant.

  16. How surprising is this: "Jackie" has only grossed $13M and is now in RedBox, so I assume that means they don't expect to see more. I know the script was heavily praised when it first went out. On Rotten Tomatoes, 89% Critic score, 64% Audience. I tend to side with the audience meter more often than not. Discuss.

Interesting to hear that my suspicions that this was just old hat, more of the same, confirmed. A much more interesting take on it would have to tell how Jackie orchestrated the hit after JFK threatened to cut off her personal coke supply that she was smuggling back from Vietnam on Air America and put her in rehab. True story.

Haven't read the script, generally don't read reviews, but I wouldn't have watched it (and didn't) from the trailer. Looked boring - in addition to looking like it was just re-walking ground that has already been covered many times before.

Scott, you make an interesting point about whether a person would want to re-read their work. Although I understand that a person may not want to re-read it for fun, why would a person not want to re-read it to improve it? If they don't like re-reading it to that end, then it probably needs to be re-written anyway. I don't see it being much different than playing a song - a great musician practices a piece again and again until it sounds right. Playing it once and then saying, I...

Maybe it's just the profession I wandered into when I took a turn down the wrong road, but in my world you re-read everything you write again and again and again and again... nothing to do with ego or or how much I like what wrote - you do it so you don't look like a slob. I don't think a person is stupid when I see typos and obvious mistakes but I do think, like CB said, that they just don't care enough about what they wrote to make sure it looked good. And if they don'...

  21. Any box office experts here-- Passengers is nearing 300 million world wide--is that a hit? What is the likely profit? Not sure how it all breaks down after advertising and theater split. I imagine they will also add a lot more money from streaming and other revenue.

    1. sbbn

      sbbn

I agree with Scott - if it were budgeted for a reasonable amount, it would have been a hit. With the budget it had, it's hard for any movie at all to recoup the costs, let alone make a profit. There are movies that unquestionably can and do but there aren't many.

@Scott, I generally lean towards smartass, but I do overall agree with you that a lengthy dialogue more often leans towards rambling and directionless. But man alive, you get a script from someone that can write great dialogue and those scenes can be amazing.

@Scott, completely agree. I read this small amateur-ish biopic script awhile back from someone or another called The Social Network. First scene was like 15 pages of straight dialogue! Pretty sure that one went nowhere and haven't heard much about that writer since.
