  1. What's the tracking on Lone Ranger? If it bombs, I'm picking up Disney stock. But it looks good so I don't WANT it to bomb, despite my lust for gold, ya know?

Jones, do you think it'll do as well as PotC at the box office?

Hard to say, really - it definitely fits the four quadrants marketing needs it to. It's Disney and Depp, so that should help...assuming star power isn't dead. I'm going to go with a soft "yes".

Currently 22% on RT, but at the end of the day won't word of mouth matter more? I for one am curious to see Depp as Tonto, and the TV ads I've seen suggest a fun ride.

  2. How was Under the Dome? I'm waiting until Friday to watch it on Amazon Prime. Don't tell me it's directed by Mick Garris. :P

    1. craktactor

      craktactor

I compare it to Stephen King's "It". And by that, I mean when the "monster" was revealed. Not that there was a "monster" revealed in Under the Dome, but it was, to me, quite underwhelming. Laughable, actually. But as I've stated many times here, it's all subjective.

I'm not surprised when a film contains the name Craig Mazin in the credits. He's not exactly the stamp of quality.

You know what? I'm starting to think that we the movie-going public got punked with this one. I'm being serious. Like maybe it was the studio's way of saying, "Look what you suckers are willing to shell out $12 for!" Hahahaha...

Sounds nuts but...I'm being totally serious.

brilliant episode. also, i love that jennifer getzinger gets to direct all the good episodes now. i worked with her a few times when she was a script supervisor doing low-budget indie features in new york. see people, dreams do come true!

    4. specwriter

      specwriter

I always get excited when I see her name in the opening credits; she's one of, if not THE best director on Mad Men. You can just tell the energy level was so much higher this week than the previous episode (which also sported a new writer on the team, Jason Smuts? Don't remember seeing his name.)

  9. Anyone else think the latest episode of Mad Men was lazy and clunky? Probably my least favorite of the entire series run, and I'm a huge fan.

I disagree, Johnson. I think the kid was telling the Black theatre employee that they were sad about MLK's death. It was his way of saying he was sorry for that loss. When Don realized what he was doing and the compassion it showed, he felt that love for his son. It was good that they finally utilized his son after seasons of being completely ignored as a character.

    3. LeftyJones

      LeftyJones

Yeah it was a double meaning - he was talking TO the black guy, but talking ABOUT his own dad. So I agree he was outwardly showing compassion for the situation - but the subtext was him acknowledging his own father's sadness.

didn't love it, and really wish they were doing more with the pete and trudy storyline, which feels like their strongest in the early going of the season.

  10. Watching the Iron Man 3 live premiere on Yahoo, pretty cool.

  11. Watched pilot of Hemlock Grove. Famke seems really miscast, agree? And the two cute boys, one really pale and the other darker who may be a werewolf. Hmm, where have I seen this before? ;-)

  13. Ever heard this line before in regards to a handgun? "There's twelve in the clip and one in the throat." Raylan said it on Justified, and I've NEVER heard that "throat" reference before, wonder if it comes from Elmore Leonard or a wholly original term from the show writers?

    3. storymaps99

      storymaps99

I thought it was a great season, especially loved Patton Oswalt's Constable Bob, but I kind of lost interest (and forgot why it was so important) in the hunt for Drew Thompson. The urgency and momentum slowed a bit, you know, and they kept recycling the scene of one bad guy betraying another bad guy, leading to a stand-off. Maybe they just had one too many criminal factions? And the accents are wearing on me, which is why I think they should set it outside Kentucky next season.

Saw an early screening here in the office. Actually really enjoyed it.

  18. The Incredible Burt Wonderstone was pretty funny. I give it a B; not bad, considering the state of comedy films these days. But if it came out 10 years ago, would it have killed at the b.o.? It wanted to be Anchorman, but there just was no getting around that there's no urgency or relevance in the subject matter. Thoughts?

    3. mercutio

      mercutio

I haven't seen it yet, though I worked a few days on set as an extra, and it was a fun set. Buscemi, in particular, was hysterical when I was there. But even as much fun as it was to be on that set, I kept thinking Vegas magicians would have been a better world for a movie 10 or 15 years ago.

    4. specwriter

      specwriter

Yeah, the Jim Carrey character really skewers David Blaine and Chris Angel...and that's the problem. I always love Steve Carell, and it's still funny, but the same cast in a different scenario or maybe just a rewrite with a different angle could have worked so much better.

  19. Does the director of a series pilot get residuals on the show for the rest of its run? I assume that's the draw that attracts so many big-name directors to pilots.

    3. dsjones

      dsjones

ScarJo probably didn't want to put in an appearance after "I saw your boobs" took a shot at her. As for the musicals...the producers of the Oscars were the ones behind those musicals (except Les Mis) so it was blatant self-promoting/fellatio. Disgusted personally. The Bond "tribute" was astonishingly horrendous.
