You are much more likely to run up against the "no unsolicited material" response from agents and prodcos.

Honestly you should just cold submit wherever. What's the worst that can happen? They don't respond (which is identical to a co. that does take unsolicited). Believe me if your pitch is actually strong that won't stop people from requesting it.

Placing in some sort of decently prestigious or recognized script competition will help you greatly...

If you're trying to write to any network you may end up writing to none of them, and your script's tone may suffer.

Fugg't, man. I say write it... all over the goddamn place. Then, when you do a rough polish, after you have distanced yourself from it enough, and before you actually send it out to anybody, edit it out.

I'm going to stick with it, as I read the books and there's a great mythology there. It has top-notch vfx, I'll say that, and Cory Stoll as always is great.

I'm thinking that Sundance judges will look more for artistry and craft than "commerciality" in the current industry climate. E.g., I get told a lot that my script won't sell as a one hour drama and I should cut it to half hour.

But will Sundance judges care about that? Hopefully not, and they will judge purely on the material.

Can't worry about expectations. Stay true to the story and it will be reflected on the page. Whatever subjectivity there is to their selection isn't anything you can anticipate anyway.

It's so perfect in so many ways. The coincidence of Cooper actually asking Sean Penn a question is fantastic.

Now the only question is, was Cooper a "plant" that had already broken through and they knew he was going to be a star? Cynical thought, I know. ;-)

100% agree with Jiblings. While there are A, B storylines, and seasonal, and episodical arcs you aim to hit in a series, overall, the structure has become increasingly different per series over the years. Heck, some shows are up to 6-7 acts now per episode.

Tv is changing radically thanks to Netflix etc.

There are no paradigms. World of difference between episodic and serial. World of difference between ad breaks and straight through.

Write the show you want to watch.

Try and find the bible for the show you want to emulate. Some of them lay out the structure each episode should follow.

He hasn't burnt any bridges, at least that I know of, and he has a familiar face - pretty much all you need to be a working actor.

He had a lot of charisma on Dawson's Creek but hasn't picked great roles since. (Fringe included.) He needs to do lighter comic stuff. Not sure about The Affair but will tune in! My "I-don't-understand-how-he-keeps-getting-work" actor is Michael Trucco. Delightful in person, so blah on screen.

Trucco is probably easy to work with on set and looks nice on screen. In terms of acting, well, I mean as long as he can say the lines even remotely believably...

Brooklyn does a little of both. He'll work with a writer, really testing them out for a while, and then may decide the relationship may not work. However, it could also work out the other way, with Tranquility Base being an example of this.

The movie could be great, I'm just reacting to the concept and the ad campaign. It sounds like the film is original, but they're making it look exactly like other recent films in the "ghost house" and "exorcism" genres and that bugs me. I'll check it out when it hits VOD.

Yeah, Spec I agree with a lot of what you're saying, but all the films the trailer makes it seem like all went on to make lots and lots of money. Keep in mind, sadly, the American movie going audience is not looking for smart provocative film, 95% of the country wants big + dumb + explosions.

3D was done in post and the movie is dark enough already, be careful sankofa. Outside of that, enjoy the ride!

I'm also a fan, and the hallway scene was a ton of fun! And the twist at the end made my skin crawl.

The hallway scene, the consuming of the octopus... the whole premise why release a guy after x amount of years? And then, of course, the twist and the final hypothetical. There's some much going on. You don't get this kind of ambition in hollywood.

The hallway scene didn't look real, it was obviously stunt men. The long single take felt like the director intruding, it pulled me out. Same with the octopus; I wasn't watching a character eat an octopus, I was watching an ACTOR push himself to prove that he was tough. And the final twist...adds up to what? What's the point?
