  1. Taking a poll here: What's your preference for a character who is not visible, but heard - speaking on the phone (via speakerphone for ex.): (V.O.) (O.S.) or (O.C.)?

O.S. is only used if a character is in the physical scene, but just not visible.

V.O. is for narration and speakerphone or when a phone call can be heard out loud.

  2. I need to know if anyone's seen a structural paradigm for a one hour TV drama? Like a Blake Snyder beat sheet but for TV. I can't find one, could use help. Thanks!

On Blake's website, one of his people breaks down the Breaking Bad Pilot. It's the same paradigm as in the feature version, though. But TV is so different in terms of specific beats, not sure the paradigm really translates

  4. Thinking of getting a MFA in screenwriting... thoughts?

DS -- I think with the explosion of cheaper digital cameras and free outlets like YouTube, directing school may be even more anachronistic than writing school. People are making movies, editing on computer and putting it out there. Access has democratized filmmaking, in both good and bad ways IMO.

Good comments by all. I have an MFA from 'SC, but I got mine when film school was hot in the early 90s. The foundation was incredibly valuable, but I'll join the chorus and say that in 2013, it's not worth the price of admission. Literally. However, in addition to reading excellent, good and bad scripts, you must find a mentor. Someone who isn't a relative and is experienced, and will guide you through the treacherous waters without an agenda. Good luck

  7. I read the amazing SUNFLOWER late last year. Then this Cleveland 10-year kidnapping stuff pops up. Life really is stranger than fiction...

  8. My sister got me Your Screenplay Sucks! for Christmas. I'm reading it now and it's quite good. What's your favorite screenwriting book?

"Screenwriting, The Sequence Approach," by Paul Gulino is fantastic.

  9. What does "Territories Requested" mean?

    1. quain187

      quain187

it means that producers are requesting that agents/managers allow them to take in a spec script to their respective studios. So if Producer A has a deal or relationships with certain studios or buyers, they would want an exclusive right to submit a spec to those places.

  10. what should I read next: Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, Chronicle, or Broken City?

    1. quain187

      quain187

Broken City is a gritty, 70's style thriller. Chronicle is a short, interesting story using the POV structure that's quickly becoming a cliche. Script is good, though.
