I don't think the format is dead, but there is some merit to their idea. Viewing habits are changing, studios have so much invested in a film they are afraid to risk alienating the audience with an unsatisfactory ending. I love going to movies, but I am annoyed by the constant glare of cell phones in the crowd. I think theaters will always exist, but very few films on the big screen will have the influence like films of the past.

Predictability is a problem but I just saw a UK Michael Powell film from 1946 which was riveting in story and cinematography (Scorsese loves him)- David Niven in Matter of Life or Death - you're not certain if the drama is real or supernatural till the 2/3 point and perhaps not even then.

Perhaps a problem for screenwriters and older people who have seen way too many movies. But the core audience is neither. Average movie goer will continue to be entertained IMO.

It was one of my favorite pilot scripts last season and one I would have killed to get staffed on. I talk to Mick on twitter semi-regularly and can't wait to see how the show turns out.

They could have released something like Gerald's Game but while better it's a different type of movie. This type of marketing I think forces you into sequel / popcorn flick territory. If timing was right they probably would have loved to do it with Bright.

  17. Any screenwriters interested in doing a group NaNoWriMo except for screenplays? I would propse an Outline October and then we go full scale attack in November. I gotta a feature that's itchin to get written...

Writing going well. Getting PAID for my writing? That's been better in previous years. I was a more successful screenwriter in Virginia than I am now in Los Angeles. No meetings either.

If you looking for a place to get quality coverage on your script - the BL is not your huckleberry. Franklin himself has said that the BL's purpose is not to provide coverage. It can get eyes on your script - but even then, with great scores, there's no guaranty anyone's going to care.

I know someone who got her first job as a staff writer after a successful script posting on that site. In addition to being a talented writer, her script was about something unusual which I think made it easy to talk about and helped brand her and leverage her success. The show she got staffed on was a natural fit with the subject of her screenplay.

An 8, two 7's and a 6. Final thought? Consistency confusion. The 8 versus the 6 was as if the 6 read the praises of the 8 and decided those were the worst parts.

  22. After reading several scripts from the black list, two things have become clear: It's breathe, not breath and use your damn spell check. Unreal.

Maybe it's just the profession I wandered into when I took a turn down the wrong road, but in my world you re-read everything you write again and again and again and again... nothing to do with ego or or how much I like what wrote - you do it so you don't look like a slob. I don't think a person is stupid when I see typos and obvious mistakes but I do think, like CB said, that they just don't care enough about what they wrote to make sure it looked good. And if they don'...

Scott, you make an interesting point about whether a person would want to re-read their work. Although I understand that a person may not want to re-read it for fun, why would a person not want to re-read it to improve it? If they don't like re-reading it to that end, then it probably needs to be re-written anyway. I don't see it being much different than playing a song - a great musician practices a piece again and again until it sounds right. Playing it once and then saying, I...
