I like to think of the 'bad guys closing in' aspect of STC not so much in literal terms, but rather as an increasing sense of pressure being applied to the hero. In this case, it's the ever-present 'ticking clock' by which Lou must come up with something new and better each night before 6am.

Yeah, the discussion of character often gets lost in how people view Snyder's beat sheet, but fundamentally his sheet is about character metamorphosis. The thing that's different about Nightcrawler is the metamorphosis is really fucking bleak and scary. The beats are still there.
