DSJones - With film school you're essentially paying to get access to equipment and people to help you film.

If you already have access to that stuff, you don't need it. As someone mentioned earlier, you can learn *a lot* on your own. If you have the will to make something good, you'll learn what you need to learn along the way. Making anything is the best way to learn in this industry I feel.

I also know people who went to film school that don't know the...

I've found value in specific workshops -- such as Judith Weston's Acting for Directors, and Steve Kaplan's Comedy Intensive. Learning about acting, directing and improv will improve your writing. Learning from experienced pros obviously is key.

Once again thanks for the amount and quality of your opinions. Excellent points made on both sides. Obviously a big decision for me and I appreciate all of your inputs.

I agree about the scared kid. That, to me, was the whole point. Him reliving it over and over and improving and finding his feet.

Tom Cruise is fine, and with him they secured a huge budget, but I still wish they had stayed with the orginal concept.

      Great script.

Read and loved the script. They've definitely changed some things. I'm hoping it's for the better. Guess I'll have to wait and see the movie.

I agree with the comments saying it should have been a kid though. Most of the soldiers were young in the script if I remember correctly.

  3. Pacific Rim was one of the worst movies I've ever seen and I'm glad it's over.

He just needs a good American break-out role (more than background supporting) and he'll be gold. He more than capable.

  4. Any one using the blacklist to host your script refute a rating? I got a 4 along with 2 7s.

I bought 2 reviews. Both came in at a 7 (with subcategories rated as high as 9) and both had some food for thought in the notes section. One review however had some accuracy issues (e.g. wrong locations). I complained and they offered a free replacement. Big, big mistake. That review came in at 5, thus sending a shiv into my overall rating.

    3. agkinowerken

      agkinowerken

And not that it matters on the Blacklist but the script in question was a runner-up at Scriptapalooza a few years back. Lesson learned: think twice before requesting a replacement review.

    4. Pompalompa

      Pompalompa

yeah it seems to be a real crap shoot. I brought this up because of some of the weakness didn't make sense and conflicted with my two previous higher reviews. They offered a half off review but I won't take it. Thanks again. Love this site.

  5. Say you have a character who is stuttering. Do you write the dialogue like he's stuttering or do you leave a note and let the actors do their job?

Also check out a fish called Wanda. Nothing wrong with using (stutters) above the dialogue either.

King's Speech. Least disruptive method and just a great read anyway.

There are several moments in The Last of Us that are absolutely wrenching. In a lot of ways it is like an interactive movie (I think it's six hours of cut scenes alone) but a damn good movie. It's one that you finish playing and wonder why there isn't more writing like it in screenplays. There should be.

I like reading other members comments on movies because it gives me a better sense of whether I would like the movie than other reviews. The comments about the flashbacks are interesting to hear. I think flashbacks are like voiceovers - if done right they can be incredibly effective but if they are done poorly or lazily they are at best annoying, at worst distracting and disruptive.

    3. axalon

      axalon

Every flashback pretty much felt like "hey, these two had a relationship in case you forgot"

    4. sbbn

      sbbn

Sounds like a great use of flashbacks. Reminds me that flashbacks often have that "and now we are going to walk you through what you should feel" effect.

Yeah, the characters do a whole lotta drinking on that show. I noticed that too. And most often as a anti-anxiety self-medication. What if you substituted getting high in every one of those drinking scenes.

Watch INCENDIES in the meantime. It's a french movie by the same director and much better than PRISONERS. That being said, PRISONERS is very good just not on the same level as INCENDIES.

Not only are there probably two decent movies hidden in this makeshift trilogy, I'm looking forward to the inevitable cut someone's going to come up with that boils it down to one movie again, something that just more or less tells the story of the novel.
