Interesting read; thanks for the link. I can't help but find the film trailer very cheesy. I'm interested to see how it plays at the box office.

  1. Anyone have a prediction for Age of Extinction's weekend gross?

Wow, I thought maybe we'd see some franchise fatigue, but that doesn't seem so.

The screenplay has a "last time on 21 Jump St" at the beginning, like what a television show would have. Is that in the movie?

I've been lukewarm on the X-Men movies, but this one stuck me as EXCELLENT. I thought all the reviews were hyperbole, but I don't think that now.

  5. Thanks to Raccoon for killin' it. Again.

  6. I'm looking for romantic comedy/dramedy movies or scripts about a married couple who break up and get back together at the end of the movie (e.g. The Ex). Any suggestions? Thanks.

Also a bit of a stretch, but Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues.

  7. Need a comedy spec to read. Tired of reading sci-fi. I mean, I'm not, because I love sci-fi, but I need to read more comedies. Any to recommend?

I don't know if you have read 21 Shots?

It was written in 2010. Not sure it's the greatest, but it might be worth your time.

  8. If you are an aspiring screenwriter who wants desperately to tell the stories that pop in your head at all hours of the day, the FUCKING IGNORE all this nonsense, about what is a sale and what isn't. Jesus. The people talking about this the most, won't be around in two years. Get a bottle. Stand in a lightning storm and pray you capture it. Or just write great stuff. You do the math.

Hey Charlie Brown, I appreciate you sharing, man. I find your story really interesting.

My perspective is limited, but it seems that what Gary calls a Hope Machine isn't really a malicious and systematic attempt to create hope in industry outsiders. However, it sounds like there is the potential for folks outside Hollywood to be misinformed to some degree.

I don't think Gary's telling folks to stop writing. If his post gives people some information they didn...

Wouldn't folks serious about their screenwriting pursuit want a full understanding of the industry they endeavor to enter?

(of course, folks can be serious and not be very concerned)

What do folks think about the notion of a Hope Machine? My sense was that John Gary is saying that the industry intentionally tries to create hope in folks trying to break in.

  18. I'm curious - is it as unsurprising to others that Need for Speed underperformed analyst expectations? I've been tracking it because it seemed like expectations were overblown from day 1 (it was definitely not under-marketed).

Box Office Mojo had an interesting analysis going into the weekend.

      http://www.boxofficemojo.com/news/?id=3798&p=.htm

      Here's a bit of it:

There is some cynicism surrounding Need for Speed due to its transparent similarities to the Fast & Furious series and its awful reviews (23 percent on Rotten Tomatoes). Also, the marketing has failed to show much in the way of story, which has consistently taken a back seat (get it?) to the fast cars. This is en...

  19. Screenplay for drive has 89 pages. The movie is about hour and forty minutes.how do you show slow burning moments/scenes? Also the drive script suffers from he thinks, she thinks.

Spacing the action lines is one way. More space can be used for action that takes more time to show on screen. You can use white space to adjust the pace of your action.

Off the top of my head, I made an example to illustrate:

      INT. Building - Day

Jake slides to a stop and pulls his gun. He levels it at the window. BLAM BLAM BLAM. Glass SHATTERS. He shields his eyes as he's showered by glistening splinters.

      Then, footfalls.

Don't know about tracking, but it got pushed from a prime spot of late December to MLK weekend. That to me is not a great sign.

Is it essentially about Decaprio getting super rich while taking advantage of people? I'm trying to get a sense of the story.
