  1. Anyone see 22 Jump Street? How does it compare to 21 Jump Street?

Don't get me wrong, I don't necessarily disagree with Amanda. She is right: screenwriting is an incredibly difficult, almost impossible career to achieve any kind of success in. I just think that taking career advice from someone with no actual professional screenwriting experience might not be the best way to proceed if you're serious about it. Don't let someone who doesn't really know bring you down.

...unless she's improved tremendously, she's a struggling writer for a reason.

But, it's getting her lots of attention, which I'm sure is something she enjoys. And she sure is nice to look at, ain't she?

I went to school with Amanda, the author, and took several screenwriting classes with her, and I'm amazed her blog continues to get as much attention as it does.

She was a pretty mediocre writer from what I remember, and obviously started the site to peddle her services as a reader. Nothing wrong with wanting to make a living off of your degree, but take her "advice" with a grain of salt. She's not a professional writer by any stretch of the imagination, and, unles...

  6. Just wondering what is up with people asking for screeners for films that are currently in the theaters. I mean, can't people spend the 10 bucks and support our industry?

Check out Moviepass. I've had it for years and it's saved me a ton on films.

I asked him about the pilot of Breaking Bad and how people reacted to it given how much description he put in the action, which I've always read is a big no no when writing a script, and he essentially told me that people don't care what rules you break so long as what you write is good. So, go crazy people! Just write good stuff.

I met him a few years ago after a Breaking Bad panel and he gave me some good writing advice. Very friendly.

  9. Any Jeff Goldsmith fans? I recently re-found this epic interview with Christopher McQuarrie. A master storyteller, even if his movies don't always work: http://ex.fm/song/5g80x/Christopher+McQuarrie+-+Valkyrie+Q&A-Jeff+Goldsmith

  10. Speaking of walking out, I've been trying to read the books ahead of the scripts concerning certain adaptations. So I'm halfway through Ender's Game (book), and I'm surprised to say I don't think I can finish.

It's one of the most overrated science fiction novels of all time, in my opinion. Not a terrible book, but not nearly as great as it's often spoken to be.

  11. Good Lord, Fast & Furious 6 was simply wretched. Every line was a full-on groaner. I pity the morons that laughed along, above the howls the the damned infant on some idiot's lap. I was dying inside at the slow mental pitches to the lowest common denominators that pepper this increasingly jamoke planet. Twarn't much better when I snuck over and wasted two hours of my life in the excruciating wonderment that is Hangover III.

Agreed about Oldboy, but you should check out Lady Vengeance and Mr. Vengeance if you haven't. Lady is one of my favorite films of all time.

How was the script, if you've read it? I'm really curious to compare it to the film, given the differences between the script of "Will Be Blood" to the film.

Completely disagree. I thought the Master was the best film of the year, and the best film I've seen in a long, long time. I totally hated Looper, though. But to each his own.

  17. As I prep for a move to LA, I'm looking for living suggestions. Thoughts? On a budget (i'm quitting my job to move), but I want to be close to the "action" and hopefully get an internship or a PA job right away. Thanks in advance!

Certain parts of North Hollywood, near Studio City, are very nice, and not too expensive. Burbank, Studio City, Sherman Oaks are all good places, though a bit on the expensive side.

I completely disagree about the "don't live in the valley" comment; it's not an ideal place if you go out a lot and want to party and all that, but, depending on what part of the valley you ultimately decide to call home, getting around really isn't that much trouble. And it's c...

This was an isolated incident in one small town. The world isn't suddenly less safe because of it, so if you want to go to the theater, please do so knowing you'll more than likely have a good time, assuming the movie isn't terrible, that is.

  22. The new Dark Knight Rises trailer - Could thst be black gate prison that Wayne is in? Wayne is also using the support of a walking cane at the start. 24. Come home from awesome trip with daughter over the weekend. Power up the laptop. Everything is great. Check a few things and leave the room for 20 minutes. Return to find: OPERATING SYSTEM NOT FOUND. Urgh. Lost zero movie scripts as they are all on my I-Pad & In the CG Arc. All TV which I hadn't uploaded to either is gone. Every script I have been writing for the last year: Gone. 550 gigs of Comics: Gone. All lists more or less gone to current updates before 02/11. Fuck.

Always backup everything online. Dropbox is easy to use, and gives you a bunch of GB free on signup, more than enough space for any scripts you might be working on.
