  1. Thank you to whomever recommended Ashish Mehta's services as a script reader. I forget who recommended him a few weeks ago but he's a great asset and very affordable to boot.

  3. I often wonder what studio execs are thinking. Am I the only one who is not surprised that movies like Burnt and Our Brand is Crisis are flops?

... drama. Film studios seem to be less and less interested in these stories except to for award contenders, which, I think, was how all of these were conceived -- and with Steve Jobs rightly so -- before the public shunned them.

I think Andrew's right. Personally, I'm glad they tried to do adult dramas, even if the results were mixed and the reception was cold. Steve Jobs isn't doing well either at the box office, but it's not because the critical reception has been tepid. I read one article claiming that all three flopped because they were a rehash of "white people problems". Maybe. There's a whole slew of reasons why, the biggest being that TV is now the home of the mid range budget...

  5. Wow. Bone Tomahawk was a great script and an even better film. I was worried as the trailer was lousy.

Wonderful. I was worried too. Terrible trailer. You've given me hope.

I have been working on this script for years and did my research before the documentary came out.

I think what he means is that the best way to learn is to fail. You learn best from your own mistakes, not from being told or even witnessing first hand lessons that others go through. I have to second that. Fail big and you learn a lot.

  11. Where do we stand as group on referencing actors in a script's character descriptions? (i.e. Think: Jennifer Lawrence, Beauty & The Beasts) Weigh in.

Not a fan personally. It almost always takes me out, the few exceptions are comedies, like bishop said. Not only does it take me out of the script, it really tells me nothing about the character -- a Jennifer Lawrence type could mean anything to a number of people. That's at best. At worst it puts me in a very negative mind state as a reader, like saying, "oh, really? You think you can JL for this role?" So I say avoid it and put time towards really capturing the heart of your cha...

I was on it for five seconds. I'm sure if you find the right people it's a great source, but I couldn't put up with the constant trolls, know-it-alls and negativity.

  15. Just want some advice here. I want to upload my script, but the ending isn't quite finished as I am re-writing at the mo. Would people be interested in reading the other 80 pages if I put if up or I would lI be wasting my time? I want to upload something before a prepare to send it for script coverage in the next week.

Definitely agree. If you're excited about having just written something, show it to a friend. You'll be kicking yourself later if you send it out into the world now.

No matter what you're probably doing rewrites unless you are directing and producing it yourself.

  20. As great as so much television is these days, and as addictively as I tune in to some of it, I tend not to re-watch it. Yet I do re-watch movies. I'm curious if others have similar tendencies. And thoughts on why that is (or isn't). Assuming this is the case for others, is it something as simple as production value? Or does it go deeper? Does it have to do with the story mechanics? Like, in order to go on this 2 hour journey, movies are super-compressed with idea and emotion, and...

I agree with Elliot -- I've watched The Wire and Sopranos (Sopranos 1st season as many times as some of my favorite movies, before it became unfocused). I think most people don't because they find devoting 13+ hours too intimidating. Whereas 2 hours can be digested in a single night.
