  1. Been dumped thanks to my girlfriend's mother saying "It's him or us [the parents]." In the space of a few weeks I've gone from "Not right for you." to Worse Than Hitler. Noidea how. What scripts should I read to cheer me up?

Sorry to hear that, man. I take it Romantic Comedies are out of the question?

If you're a comic book/super hero fan, read Man of Tomorrow. I read that a couple days go and loved it. Awesome story. Basically Batman vs. Superman.

  2. This is 40: Agree it's too long, but the big problem for me is that it's just NOT FUNNY. Sorry, but Apatow's style is just played out. If this exact same movie had come out in 2007, I would have been laughing uproariously. You gotta know when to move on.

  8. SMASH CUT TO.... a lame transition. WTF? A cut is a cut. Who started this "smash cut" nonsense? Curmudgeonly annoyed.

Gotta agree, nazardo. All this "pulled me out of the story" stuff just means you didn't like the story. If you're reading Chinatown and see a "smash cut" or a misspelling and are "pulled out of the story" I'd be inclined to think one of your elementary school teachers didn't do their job.

A smash cut is an abrupt cut, right? Like from Rocky talking about his fight to getting punched in the face by Drago.

A cut is just a cut. Like a jump cut or whatever. Can be in the same scene, where a smash is usually to a different scene altogether (location, tone, etc). At least, that's how I understood it.

      Maybe I'm wrong?

My guess is that it's probably a couple scripts he downloaded here from Tracking Board lol.

  13. Anyone see Killing Them Softly? Is it really ‘F’ CinemaScore worthy?

Just looked it up. DRIVE got a "C-" Cinemascore. Not quite an "F" but still, audiences disliked it. It was my favorite movie of 2011. Pretty much everyone I recommended it to (friends, FB, Twitter) hated it. So yeah, I think the analogy applies.

My DRIVE comparison is in the fact that the marketing for Drive promised Fast and the Furious and packed theaters with moviegoers expecting that, but the result was more of an "art house" film, if you will. Same thing here. A lot of folks went expecting HEAT or MIAMI VICE but instead got something totally different, thus the "F" Cinemascore.

Yeah Dan, the theme of the film was sort of an analogy for the financial crisis. Too Big To Fail and all that. It was a bit too heavy-handed for me (my only gripe) but that last scene fit the them perfectly.

And Foz is right, that final monologue is pure awesomeness. I literally started clapping lol.

Saw it Friday. I liked it. I would compare it to DRIVE. Very subdued, with sudden instances of brief, graphic violence. Very well shot. Definitely not an F, but Joe Fan wants a loud movie, so I can see why some might have disliked it. Most Cinephiles (like us) should enjoy it though.

Just IMO, with the "aspiring screenwriting climate" the way it has been as of late, everyone is on the lookout for scams and ripoffs. In the words of Jamie Kennedy, EVERYBODY'S A SUSPECT!

  21. Learning how to do coverage from a doc someone posted from WME's How To. Just wanted to say that I love this site and I hate the things I've heard lately. I appreciate all the people who have posted scripts/treatments/samples/whatever on here. You've really given this outsider a lot to learn so THANK YOU.

Charlie, was that posted on TB? Or did you get it elsewhere?

Mysterian, it seems like Scriptshadow was first, and Tracking Board may be next in the crosshairs. Here's hoping it isn't...

  22. I have new spec ready to go out-- have been told mid November is the budget cutoff for a lot of prod-co's. Is mid-November a bad time to put a spec on the market?

  23. Seriously... does it get any better than Sunday Night TV? Homeland & Walking Dead are amazing!

  24. Congrats to Dan Dollar! Great news on the script - worth the attention.
