It all depends on how good a producer/development head you've got soliciting the notes. If they're pro, then they'll understand there's a balancing act to be played.

Also, I suspect these notes are gonna be used a lot more by independent producers looking to secure private investors than for any other purpose. Just another way to make something appear a "sure-thing" to the rich oil baron fronting the production costs.

On a broad marketing level I can see it working in the middle of trends (like target demons vs. summoned demons) but if you're at the tail-end of a trend, this isn't going to be very useful. I'd only see it as a potential commercial-value barometer if I were looking to maximize scenes to be used in promotional material. Could be wrong but that's how I see it.

  2. First time I've had to pitch for a writing assignment ... doesn't matter if I get it or not, I just popped my cherry :)

  3. Based in London, UK? I'm setting up a bimonthly coffee-meet for writers/filmmakers in central london. No subscriptions or fees, just grab your own caffeine intake from whichever Starbucks we're at. PM me if interested :)

  4. So my spec "Goodnight, Moon Thieves" got an 8 out of 10 by an anonymous reviewer on the Black List site. It's obviously not as good as getting a 9 or 10, but it still seems like I should be able to leverage an 8 to get more people reading it. Any suggestions?

  5. My sister got me Your Screenplay Sucks! for Christmas. I'm reading it now and it's quite good. What's your favorite screenwriting book?

Love MacKendrick's On Filmmaking - it introduced me to The Third Man when I first read it back as a wee lad.

Paul Gulino's book is great. I also like Lagos Egri's "The Art of Dramatic Writing" though his voice is distasteful.

  14. Learning how to do coverage from a doc someone posted from WME's How To. Just wanted to say that I love this site and I hate the things I've heard lately. I appreciate all the people who have posted scripts/treatments/samples/whatever on here. You've really given this outsider a lot to learn so THANK YOU.

Absolutely - it reinforces a lot. However there is a danger that you end up thinking too technical.

Yeah, I sold my soul to the devil early this year. Also worked in a couple production companies covering submissions. It almost pays the bills but does make writing a lot harder to get on with imo.

More on topic - I learned coverage from T. L. Katahn's Reading for a Living and Asher Garfinkel's Screenplay Story Analysis. Though nothing beats reading 1,000s of scripts.
