  1. TBers who use tablets to read scripts on (iPad, Kindle Fire, Galaxy Tab) How has your experience been with it? Does it hurt your eyes to read off something like that for extended periods of time?

I read .pdf's on my iPad and it does hurt my eyes after a bit. I think it may be the brightness setting or the distance I'm holding it from my face?

I use a kindle fire and it works well for pdfs that are text rather than photocopies (if that makes sense). The photocopies are blurier so I have to turn it sideways to read it so it all works out in the end. Really like it alot.

I should also add that for a fair cut, I would be happy to help dig up money-filled barrels in the desert.

  3. Up until about 90 minutes in, The Lone Ranger really isn't that terrible of a movie...and then it keeps going...and going...and going...

      nazardo

Needed a big cut and the parts to remove were pretty obvious. A decent movie is hidden in there.

Typical Rossio and Elliott? The first Pirates movie puts me to sleep. SO bloated.

      axalon

Outside of the photography, it's not a good movie by any stretch.

But I feel like putting out a 90ish minute version of this movie would have saved Disney a lot of headaches, not to mention money.

  9. While I understand the frustration that must come with getting constantly criticized by such an established fanbase, Orci saying "As I love to say, there is a reason why I get to write the movies, and you don’t." comes off a bit douchey doesn't it? http://www.cinemablend.com/new/Star-Trek-Darkness-Writer-Bob-Orci-Kindly-Tells-Fans-F-k-Off-39385.html

And how does a tie in game even remotely affect a movie? The logic there is bizarre. But at least now I know why the movie's logic was so off base.

Dexter is a hit that went on too long for the obvious financial reasons. Nothing new here.

I watched it last night for the first time in years. And while the dialogue can be cheesy and some scenes are very heavy handed, the progression of the story is terrific.

@jones No, not at all. Story threads get picked up and dropped at whim. I think they really thought "let's make this girl a lesbian, yeah, that'll make her interesting!". And that's pretty much all we know about her, is that she likes women and she's "tough". This can be extended to pretty much every character on the show. His wife gets super pissed at him annnnd then she's cool with everything.

I really enjoyed Pain & Gain. The Rock was great in it.

  14. It's interesting thinking how a movie like 'Tootsie' would roll out in 2013. Most likely having to make its way through the festival circuit before being accessible to the masses many months later in a limited release. As opposed to 1982 where it was released to everyone at the same time.

    1. specwriter

      specwriter

I was just thinking about that, in terms of how so many of the hits of the 80s would not even get greenlit now. So many of the pop culture "tentpoles" of the 80s were not designed as franchises, even if they did spawn sequels.

  15. Really enjoyed MUD. Jeff Nicholas has some serious ability, simple story with good writing, good direction, beautiful photography. Would recommend.

Yep, fantastic movie. One of the year's best along with BEFORE MIDNIGHT, STOKER, FRANCES HA, PLACE BEYOND THE PINES, DRUG WAR and FRUITVALE STATION. Been a good year for movies so far if you can just ignore the popcorn movies.

@ira It really sucks how all those movies you listed got completely buried under crap like R.I.P.D.

@Axalon, a toast it is. It really is a tragedy. The saddest part of all is that they bought the script for a substantial amount for a spec (which it deserved) because, I'd like to think they recognized how great it was. And then they tore it apart and renamed it! What the fuck?? Why bother even buying it - let someone who actually wants to do something in line with what they are buying pick it up.
