Status Updates posted by axalon

  1. TBers who are into/follow politics, how plausible were the events in season 2 of House of Cards?

SPOILER ALERT!!! I found it a bit unbelievable that the president was about to be impeached for such a minor offense compared to what our current president has done during his tenure. I think this phrasing is more PC? You can disagree with me of course and I promise not to wish that harm befalls you.

      axalon

Whoa what'd I miss? Did someone say something offensive?

@Red I figured movie/discussions usually happen in the status updates so I figured I'd post here. If you want I can move this to Chit Chat, although not as many people seem to frequent it.

      @Pompa (SPOILERS)

Yeah it felt like such a little thing I was amazed that his numbers dropped as fast as they did.

I'm also curious about what the public's real reaction would be to a President taking anti-anxiety meds...

  2. New Godzilla trailer, getting pretty excited about this!

      specwriter

They're definitely going for a scary angle, it feels more like a horror movie.

@dsjones, I'll have a look and see if I've still got the name's of the books he said I should buy.

  3. House of Cards must hold some type of record for the amount of metaphors and analogies they churn out every episode

Really? True Detective is like metaphor heaven.

    3. axalon

      axalon

True Detective is a little more subtle and tactful about it, House of Cards is so blatant that sometimes I wonder if the metaphors are an inside joke among the writers.

Kind of agree with Dan, don't think Jolie has the chops to pull this off. Acting was abysmally stale by the kids, on the verge of cliche. All in the final product I suppose.

when the coen bros. write a script, it's hard to screw it up. in other words she'll do fine!

  5. Man, Monuments Men got critically hammered. Is it is bad as the reviews say?

    1. benskelly2

      benskelly2

Have you read it? I found it just as dull and uninvolving on the page as the critics seem to find it on the screen. I'm actually relieved to know I'm not alone. I like that Clooney takes chances and is willing to make mistakes and have failures, I'm just not excited by about 99% of his output as a filmmaker.

    2. Pompalompa

      Pompalompa

I couldn't even get past the first thirty pages of the script.

    3. Corsairs

      Corsairs

I'm with the critics on this one. Found it lacking in drama, unfocused, emotionally leading. It's not horrific, but it's a terrible disappointment given the talent involved.

  6. SNL's spoof of Her was actually pretty funny http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v_h_xHZylB8

  7. Whoa...that escalated quickly...

  8. Is the new Jack Ryan movie not tracking well? I feel like Paramount is really going all out with their marketing for it.

    1. bladebeam1

      bladebeam1

Don't know about tracking, but it got pushed from a prime spot of late December to MLK weekend. That to me is not a great sign.

  9. Man, it felt exhausting getting through Wolf of Wall Street. Not sure if that's a good or bad thing.

The first hour was really good, I loved watching him build up his business but the last two hours felt like roughly the same scene copy and pasted over and over.

I did think the meeting Belfort had with the FBI agents on his boat was really great too.

    3. bladebeam1

Is it essentially about Decaprio getting super rich while taking advantage of people? I'm trying to get a sense of the story.

      sbbn

I just saw it - thought it was hilarious.

After all the reviews talking about how near-pornographic it's supposed to be, I was surprised that I thought it was all-and-all relatively tame on that front. Maybe I'm too desensitized from watching HBO and Showtime. I'm talking about you, Game of Thrones!

  10. Well, can definitely see why Holland, Michigan was rated so highly on the Black List

      sbbn,

      Yeah, I realize that.

My understanding of the spirit of the list is:

"These are scripts around town which haven't been made but deserve another light shined on 'em toward that end."

Pre-pro since September violates that spirit, in my view.

Think of the writers out there who could have benefited from the slot instead of HM, which is clearly BEING MADE.

@Foz90, yeah I'm surprised the production company hasn't changed that yet.

My opinion is of no consequence but as long as the film hasn't started principal photography I'm good with it being on the ballot.

  11. I feel like we're going to get some type of big casting announcement on Christmas, maybe Star Wars?

  12. Was never a huge Planet of the Apes fan, but I'm really digging where they're taking the franchise.

Who said anything about multiple shots? Just a quick glimpse, like the way they showed Godzilla in the Godzilla teaser.

Nolan has some of the best resources at his disposal, I'm just curious as to what his rendition of a wormhole would be.

I'm looking forward to seeing his take on a wormhole, too. Also, curious about the neutron star and ice planet "plants".

I think you're dead on, Axalon. I completely agree. They haven't pushed it for a while and then suddenly they are dropping the price significantly. It's too bad - I completely love paperwhite and I'd seriously consider picking up a DX paperwhite.

Not sure what I'm looking forward to more. Watching Homeland or the TB discussion that happens afterward.

It's a "bridge episode" (according to the producers. Bridge to NOWHERE! (booyah!)

  16. Broken Circle Breakdown might be the best movie I've seen all year. Cannot recommend it enough.

      sbbn

I don't give a shit whether Dana or mom are great actresses -- Brody's gone so the rest of the family needs to go. I don't need a show about families working through their interpersonal issues. I have American Dad for that.

    3. benskelly2

      benskelly2

Well, he's not really gone... Clearly, tehy're going to circle back to him by the end of the season. But enough of that. Was that Death-By-Bottle harsh or what?

    4. sbbn

      sbbn

No shit "he's not really gone" but when they include him in all of one episode for the entire first half to the season and for no real meaningful purpose, for all intents and purposes to the most present episode, he's non-existent.

Less about money and more about consistency. Most writers can't write the same script for over a year. He tired. Happens all the time. The writing process -- especially on a film due 15' -- must have been exhausting. Fresh eyes is often the best thing.

    3. dsjones

      dsjones

Coz, that doesn't quite fit. Especially given how Arndt was a major packaging point for the Disney/Lucasfilms acquisition. The idea that he just left to take offers on something else is strange, especially given Arndt's love for the property.

    4. aphid47

      aphid47

I was excited when I heard Arndt was the writer, but now that it's JJ and Kasdan starting over, I'm lowering my expectations.
