  1. Blacklist read recommendations? Usually it's pretty easy for me to find scripts on the list that impress but this time, after quite a few false starts, I've been struggling to find anything I want to read (or, if I did read, glad that I did).

@adlocke - sometimes. I've had scripts I've finished and was really glad I pushed through. None here, though. One just made me angry I had wasted my time when I should have known better after the first few paragraphs.

Executed well, yes. Executed poorly, no. Just kinda like... every other potential movie idea.

What's to understand? In the really real world people participate in group conversations without actively contributing (sometimes saying nothing at all) all the time. This isn't exactly a new phenomenon created by the internet.

  6. Why shoot film if your movie is set to premiere on HBO anyway? And at the cost of TWO shooting days...?

      sbbn

That I wouldn't dispute - no matter what the budget, it should be spent wisely. I'm not convinced film is wisely spent.

3 mil for a movie, even a made for cable movie, is not much at all.

  9. I know it's just a teaser, but that JOY trailer is unrecognizable as the excellent script I read. Since when does she fire a gun?? I hope David O. Russell didn't just throw away all of Annie Mumolo's work

I have no idea of how the script developed here, but Russell did massive rewrites of Three Kings to the point it was almost unrecognizable from where it started. I loved Three Kings so I can't say that's inherently a bad thing.

  10. So thoughts about the Suicide Squad sizzle trailer that "leaked" yesterday? Honestly, I loved it! Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn *MIGHT* be an inspired casting choice that going to make her a star it seems. I can't wait to see it when it comes out next year!

  11. Any recommendations on a books or website that helps with the modern day blueprint of screenplays. I used to write comedies, but have transitioned to TV Dramas. However I have a drama Idea for a feature and would like to get reacquainted with screenplay structure as it looks today.

In my little world, I tend to believe books about structure are great if you're writing a grad paper but not so great for anything else. Beginning, middle, end. Everything else is that slog of a journey you have to figure out yourself and the best light is finding what you enjoyed (movies/books) and then struggling to figure out what it was that worked so well for *you.* Of course, there is a million-dollar industry that disagrees with me so I'll leave it to the masses to tear my w...

  15. Where do we stand as group on referencing actors in a script's character descriptions? (i.e. Think: Jennifer Lawrence, Beauty & The Beasts) Weigh in.

I love that quote from time bandits - that's hilarious. But that's very different than "CHARACTER who looks like FAMOUS PERSON."

I don't have super strong feelings about it (I'lll keep reading) but... it does strike me as weak. It's kind of like "I couldn't think of anything else so blah." I prefer a bit more creativity.

  21. Just saw the trailer for Maggie. Looks great! How was the script?

  22. I'm freaking out. I know this happens all the time, but I am about 1 or 2 months away from finishing a script that has the EXACT SAME CONCEPT as another project that was announced in the trades. I am very proud of this script and feel it is the best thing I have written. But I can already hear the rebuttals, and I don't want to waste my time working on something that seems to be dead out of the gate. What would you guys do?

@Eric W. Gotta disagree. As someone pointed out earlier, if Gilligan had known about Weeds he wouldn't have bothered to create Breaking Bad. Having doubt or questioning something isn't a sign that you don't care - that's sign of being human. People frequently struggle with self-doubt in their most personal efforts and those they care most about. If you're the exception to that, great for you, but it doesn't mean everyone else just doesn't care because they str...

  24. Any opening credit sequence montages that you liked?

Lord of War was great. Dragon Girl Tattoo wasn't really a montage but it was a great opening. The Kingdom has a brilliant montage that provided a hundred year history to set the stage in all of a couple minutes.

Write what you want to write and don't worry about what other people are writing. If you write something amazing, people will recognize that and it won't matter if someone else had a similar idea. If you write something shitty, it won't matter how "original" your idea is, it will still be shitty.
