  1. Off to see Captain America 2 today. Can't wait and judging by the reviews here in the Uk. It's one of the better marvel solo attempts. Can wait to see what the end credits reveal is, too.

  3. Also congrats to MOVIEGUY!!!

  4. What did everyone think of the Sin City: A Dame to Kill for trailer? I wasn't sure about the music. The trailer itself seemed okay, but its early days, and I have have high expectations for it considering how much I loved the first one. Did Miller write the script himself or was RR involved? I know Monaghan did a draft. After the Spirit, I'd worry if It was just Miller writing.

  5. Academy Awards or True Detective... Well, that's an easy choice. I'll find out who won the awards on twitter or something.

  8. As great as so much television is these days, and as addictively as I tune in to some of it, I tend not to re-watch it. Yet I do re-watch movies. I'm curious if others have similar tendencies. And thoughts on why that is (or isn't). Assuming this is the case for others, is it something as simple as production value? Or does it go deeper? Does it have to do with the story mechanics? Like, in order to go on this 2 hour journey, movies are super-compressed with idea and emotion, and...

I watched ER religiously for almost it's entire run. Never watched an episode twice. (Although the one where Lucy & Carter got stabbed was one for the TV Hall Of Fame)

And, yes, there's a certain journey you're on when first watching a TV series - with a drawn-out tension and "unknown future" factor - that can never be replicated when you watch it again.

It's an extremely interesting question. My only answer is very basica and what's already been said really. A film is a complete entity - beginning, middle and end...with the energy, momentum, catharsis, thrill, an entire story can deliver. In TV, each episode (no matter how amazing) is just one part of the whole and therefore not as satisfying a rewatch.

  11. Season 2 of House Of Cards seems a bit more fragmented then the 1st season. Also burns at slower pace. Haven't figured out my thoughts on it. Though it seems season 1 may have been better.

  15. Spent the ady yesterday at the multiplex while my truck was being worked on. 3 Days To Kill was completely forgetable, even though I enjoyed the script last year. Robocop wa a steaming turd. My passion is the craft of screenwriting. I'm a movie nut. I'm a story junkie. I'm a script hound. So why is that I can't remember the last time a film actually satisfied me... I have high hopes for Noah, even though Hollywood (Sodom and Gomorrah) looks like it's trimmed the ev...

Very true, Mr. Cakes! Your description of what made the 70's great (maverick talent given the big train set and left alone) is spot-on. Well said. Maybe if film gets as democratized as it seems to be heading and overrun with

"amatuers", studios will start trusting and valuing talent again over familiarity and number crunching.

quality we don't seem to have today. However, I have to say this Oscar season gives me a little hope. We still have some adult films being made despite it all.

Hate to tell you, gentlemen, but some decades ARE better than others when it comes to film. A perfectly valid question is will this batch of films be remembered, rewatched, referenced. revered 40 years from now, the way THE GODFATHER, AMERICAN GRAFFITI, THE EXORCIST, CHINATOWN, JAWS, TAXI DRIVER, ONE FLEW OVER THE CUCKOO'S NEST, DOG DAY AFTERNOON, ROCKY, STAR WARS are to this day. Yes, the 70's had plenty of shitty films ('disaster movies' alone), but it had a deep bench of...

I feel the same. Great movies - even just just above-average popcorn movies - have become a rare thing. To maintain sanity, I would recommend getting Netflix and watching foreign movies you have never heard of.

  20. Imagine a U.S. president who had ten kids and the nightmare that would be for the Secret Service. Sounds like an idea for a movie.

  21. "The Guardians of the Galaxy" trailer was magnificent.

  22. Even if you're not a fan of biopics, this one looks like it has a story worth telling

  23. Inside No. 9 is incredible. UK folk, iPlayer! US folk, watch it some other way.
