  1. I'm sure I'm in the minority here and will probably get crucified for this, but I honestly do not get the hype for Stranger Things. It seems like the more people hype a show up all over social media the more let down I am by it when I finally get around to watching. Props to the writers for getting it going but I just was not engaged. Discuss.

Did you hook up with any bald girls who loved waffles?

Thank you. I hated it, Hater. I thought it was so idiotic and maudlin, and just cobbled together every wannabe VHS Spielbergian cliche from the 80's you could think of. They even managed to cram Altered States in there. Just incredibly lame and I forced myself to watch all 8 terrible hours.

  3. Loving STRANGER THINGS on Netflix.

I feel so alone, haha. I don't get it. It's a weak (and shameless) mishmash of Spielbergian 80's cliches with a Tangerine Dream soundtrack (plus nostalgic radio hits, of course) and I'm wondering...what am I missing?? It feels like a hundred bad movies on VHS. Is that the appeal? I'm sincerely baffled.

  4. Anyone else here a fan of Silicon Valley on HBO? Loving the authenticity.

  5. "The Night Of" - pilot of new series on HBO to Go, Steve Zallian & Richard Price. Excellent. Check it out.

  6. Okay, I know it's a cliche old standby, but... What is the best (still) unproduced script you've ever read?

Some great choices here. I'll add an oldie: Age Of Aquarius by Phil Alden Robinson. Silly title, but a great romantic drama against the backdrop of the war in Bosnia. Was to have starred Harrison Ford and Juliette Binoche, but was shut down on the eve of production and completely forgotten after that.

  7. Will anyone be at Cannes for meetings & possible deals?

  8. So...a question for anyone who wants to help. I've written a script for a short film based on a story by Stephen King (have the rights) - not horror though, more of a melancholy memory piece like "Stand By Me" - and would like to get it to someone who might want to cut their directing teeth on it. A film student with money or...? Any suggestions? What would you do?

  12. Okay... Best funky/jazzy/propulsive "heist" music to write to? Any suggestions?

Great theme, CB. I love that series. The end credits theme is cool as well.

Thanks, guys. I saw that Joey Alexander on 60 Minutes - amazing. And with only 7 or 8 decades of career to go! I find certain types of jazz make great writing music. Took me years to realize listening to my favorite songs (with singers, lyrics) just distracts and slows me up. Robert - that's some great propulsive music alright. Reminds me of some of David Arnold's work on the Bond films, like TND.

Thank you, Andrew! Really appreciate it. Great suggestions there. Brubeck led me to lots of great stuff of the smooth jazz/fusion variety, and F.O.O.L has some very cool higher-energy electronica tracks for "action writing". David Holmes did some slick pieces for the Oceans films, even though I don't like the actual movies. Anyone else? Makes such a difference to have good music.

  16. What did you think of the Force Awakens? How would you rank the movie in comparison to the other Star Wars movies?

I think that people are just relieved that the universe they remember and loved as kids is open for business again after Lucas really destroyed his own creation. Now different writers and directors can and will take it out for a spin - and the stars are the limit. Hopefully, we'll get that Empire feeling again.

  19. I often wonder what studio execs are thinking. Am I the only one who is not surprised that movies like Burnt and Our Brand is Crisis are flops?

      benskelly2

Noted. It will just be sad if they use the failure of these few as an excuse not to make the others.

I was talking to Stringer Bell, not you, Ad. And we're not fictitious. I was asking SB because I also agree that any adult films in the marketplace are welcome at any time. Of course, some are not going to do well, but I would rather see the studios take chances on real stories than see another superhero movie. It's like living on jellybeans alone - it's not good for you.

What's your point? That they shouldn't be made at all or released in theatres?

  22. After reading the reviews for Burnt, I wonder: What's worse, having your screenplay never made? Or having it turned it a terrible movie?

    1. benskelly2

      benskelly2

Disagree. There's always hope that someday it will be, when it's made badly...you have to live with that piece of shit and mourn what might have been. Let's just say, I know what I'm talking about.
