  2. What are some of the biggest changes you've seen from script to screen?

Worst of all is JOY. What David O Russell did to Annie Mumolo’s script should be considered a war crime. He should be tried in The Hague.

Interstellar was very different on the page.

I only have three! So... I’m an asshole?

  6. Only a few months late... Boy, were you guys right about The Last Jedi! WTF? Why can't anyone seem to write a smart, fun, exciting Star Wars script anymore?? None of it really makes sense and it's not even half as clever as it should be. Diminishing returns all around.

LOL, a ping-pong ball with a light saber. That pretty much nails it. And yes, the movie did feel like it was sort of awkwardly back-engineered from what JJ Abrams committed to in TFA...but which never made a whole lot of sense to begin with. I don't have any better idea of what Kylo Ren's goal is or why Rey has The Force or why Luke is "hiding out"...I could go on. None of it has any logic or emotional weight.

I’m not a SW diehard, but none of it felt interesting or fresh to me. It was lazy and pointless, a placeholder. And worst of all, they really did waste Luke, whose scenes with Rey were so flat. I just have a hard time understanding why the biggest franchise in history cannot get a decent script. Hire three different writing teams , gangbang it, but Jesus, give us something new.

  8. So what suggestions do ya all have to breathe some life back into these forums?

That seems like a good idea. Everybody can manage that in their schedule and it would draw people back into the site and get them communicating again.

  9. Is there a reason both Paddington movies are released in early January stateside and miss the Oscar cut-off? These movies are amazing (I see Paddington 1 wasn't even nominated in the animation category).

      benskelly2

Wouldn’t qualify for an animated film Oscar. Except for a very particular bear, it’s live action, no?

  11. What age did you start writing? I mean actually writing scripts, in screenplay format?

Wrote short stories and "plays" as a kid, but first wrote a screenplay when I was 17, a senior in High School. My English teacher, a nun, hated it.

Thanks for both, Andrew. This is the kind of thing that I love for writers to share on here. Appreciate it.

Meh, not that great, but thanks for asking! Haha. No, I'm okay. It's all about perspective, right? Writing is a tough gig, but with moments of great satisfaction.

  17. Script reading club has a new spec to read. Blonde Ambition!

  18. There's something crushingly confusing about reading great specs and learning from them, only to see them actualized in the theaters and get railed over by audiences and critics alike. Read: Nobody. Knows. Anything.

  20. Should we do a new topic for each script in the chit chat? Or should we post them in Member Reviews? I added all the people who've messaged me into the list on chit chat. Want to start next week?

Sounds good. Whatever you decide. Is it a rotating thing where each member gets a chance to choose a script or by votes, what?

  22. I have a GREAT movie pitch, but it might be too unbelievable: As the top law enforcement official in the United States, the U.S. attorney general, incredibly, met with the husband of a woman under investigation by the FBI in the back of an airplane idling on the tarmac. As a former president, the husband had considerable political clout. Days later the head of the FBI recommended no charges be brought against the woman, to jaw-dropping incredulity. In the aftermath, the head of the FBI finds...

Didn't see it till now. I thought it was absolutely fantastic. Give everybody an Emmy - especially Richard Price And John Turturro. Best thing I've seen in a long long time.

  25. I'm sure I'm in the minority here and will probably get crucified for this, but I honestly do not get the hype for Stranger Things. It seems like the more people hype a show up all over social media the more let down I am by it when I finally get around to watching. Props to the writers for getting it going but I just was not engaged. Discuss.
