What are some of the biggest changes you've seen from script to screen?

Wasn't a big fan of Grand Budapest, but Isle of Dogs is fantastic. Moves much faster than other Anderson flicks

Just looked at my profile for the first time in years and saw I only have 4 out of 5 stars

Only a few months late... Boy, were you guys right about The Last Jedi! WTF? Why can't anyone seem to write a smart, fun, exciting Star Wars script anymore?? None of it really makes sense and it's not even half as clever as it should be. Diminishing returns all around.

LOL, a ping-pong ball with a light saber. That pretty much nails it. And yes, the movie did feel like it was sort of awkwardly back-engineered from what JJ Abrams committed to in TFA...but which never made a whole lot of sense to begin with. I don't have any better idea of what Kylo Ren's goal is or why Rey has The Force or why Luke is "hiding out"...I could go on. None of it has any logic or emotional weight.

I’m not a SW diehard, but none of it felt interesting or fresh to me. It was lazy and pointless, a placeholder. And worst of all, they really did waste Luke, whose scenes with Rey were so flat. I just have a hard time understanding why the biggest franchise in history cannot get a decent script. Hire three different writing teams , gangbang it, but Jesus, give us something new.

So what suggestions do ya all have to breathe some life back into these forums?

Is there a reason both Paddington movies are released in early January stateside and miss the Oscar cut-off? These movies are amazing (I see Paddington 1 wasn't even nominated in the animation category).

Kudos to all the uploads of late. You guys rock!

What age did you start writing? I mean actually writing scripts, in screenplay format?

Vulture has a whole series of screenwriting article and interviews this week, some good stuff: www.vulture.com/news/how-movies-are-made-now/

For those interested in the nuances of telling a good story, check out this week's series in the LA Times on an Orange County relationship gone bad. Perfect example of storytelling that gets you to lean in and find out what happened next. http://www.latimes.com/projects/la-me-dirty-john/

Best scripts and movies about "the come-up"? e.g. Scarface, A Star is Born, Wall Street...

Just contacted the admins. They're fixing the chat room.

How is everyone's year going?

Script reading club has a new spec to read. Blonde Ambition!
-
There's something crushingly confusing about reading great specs and learning from them, only to see them actualized in the theaters and get railed over by audiences and critics alike. Read: Nobody. Knows. Anything.

Should we do a new topic for each script in the chit chat? Or should we post them in Member Reviews? I added all the people who've messaged me into the list on chit chat. Want to start next week?

Current list of people in the reading group below. Anyone else interested?

I have a GREAT movie pitch, but it might be too unbelievable: As the top law enforcement official in the United States, the U.S. attorney general, incredibly, met with the husband of a woman under investigation by the FBI in the back of an airplane idling on the tarmac. As a former president, the husband had considerable political clout. Days later the head of the FBI recommended no charges be brought against the woman, to jaw-dropping incredulity. In the aftermath, the head of the FBI finds...

The new JACK REACHER flick is boring...

So thoughts on the night of finale? I thought it was solid.

I'm sure I'm in the minority here and will probably get crucified for this, but I honestly do not get the hype for Stranger Things. It seems like the more people hype a show up all over social media the more let down I am by it when I finally get around to watching. Props to the writers for getting it going but I just was not engaged. Discuss.
