I feel so alone, haha. I don't get it. It's a weak (and shameless) mishmash of Spielbergian 80's cliches with a Tangerine Dream soundtrack (plus nostalgic radio hits, of course) and I'm wondering...what am I missing?? It feels like a hundred bad movies on VHS. Is that the appeal? I'm sincerely baffled.

I'm with you ben...rewatching it right now with my girlfriend and I'm kind of amazed nobody in production said anything. Although Netflix was right to pick it up, they're probably getting a lot of new subscribers out of it

      Reader George

So dumb WHIPLASH was in adapted category, but BIRDMAN was a deep read.

      ... who are those guys?

I think it should have beaten Imitation Game.

  7. Sounds like "Ascending" is the wrong adjective.

Guys- the movie may horrendous or whatever- but let's not make fun of filmmakers still trying to create original content. In a world where derivative garbage like TAKEN or SAFEHOUSE does huge numbers at the box office, let's support movies that actually have ambition. That are trying to give us something new. Rather than flawless films- like TAKEN, like SAFEHOUSE- that trot out the same played garbage.

You might execute your concept flawlessly but if you no ambition, if your just riffing off of far better fils (ND NOT IN A TARANTINO WAY) I got no respect for you.

  10. I guess we need to start getting coverage from the DPRK.

They greenlit my script this morning. It's about a Munchkin who leaves Oz to begin a rogue nuclear state.

    2. opie100

They greenlit that? Get it in writing.

  13. It's hard to find a more dangerously misguided director on the planet than Oliver Stone. http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/oliver-stone-planning-doc-russian-747366

I wouldn't mind watching a doc on Putin. Probably wouldn't pay to see it in a theater, but I'd watch on TV. In my opinion, there's nothing wrong with exploring a different point of view, to see where someone else is coming from. To educate yourself if nothing else.

    3. DonKasparoza

On Castro-- he's an interesting character. Many Cubans hate his rule, but many others, more so a broad swath of Latin America, look at him, even if they don't agree with all his policies, as a hero of sorts for giving America's govt the finger for last however many decades. This little guy on a little island, standing up to the biggest empire in the world. I think that's more of what Stone was admiring. His standing up to the U.S. government.

    4. opie100

Emboldening despots to further oppress their people and execute dissenters is beyond idiotic on any level.
