  1. Saw "The Descendants." Decent, but not great. I expected more from Alexander Payne, to be honest. The slow pace was deliberate, but it really slumped in the middle. I could have used more close-ups of the dying wife on the ventilator, though. [/sarcasm]

I was really disappointed by this script. Too cliche and familiar to me. And then every critic in the country started orgasming over it...

  2. The Avengers 2: Age of Ultron. What happened to the smiley guy at the end of The Avengers?

      favorsham

That plotline is being advanced by Guardians of the Galaxy (Benicio Del Toro and Karen Gillan's characters are connected to him).

  3. The Disney D23 Movie slate presentation was awesome. Lots of stars, and Lindelof and Brad Bird gave a great live teaser for "Tomorrowland." Cap America: Winter Soldier and Saving Mr. Banks look fantastic.

  4. The Incredible Burt Wonderstone was pretty funny. I give it a B; not bad, considering the state of comedy films these days. But if it came out 10 years ago, would it have killed at the b.o.? It wanted to be Anchorman, but there just was no getting around that there's no urgency or relevance in the subject matter. Thoughts?

      I enjoyed it.

Nice story, fun performances, some genuine laughs, consistently entertaining.

I haven't seen it yet, though I worked a few days on set as an extra, and it was a fun set. Buscemi, in particular, was hysterical when I was there. But even as much fun as it was to be on that set, I kept thinking Vegas magicians would have been a better world for a movie 10 or 15 years ago.

Yeah, the Jim Carrey character really skewers David Blaine and Chris Angel...and that's the problem. I always love Steve Carell, and it's still funny, but the same cast in a different scenario or maybe just a rewrite with a different angle could have worked so much better.

  5. This could be the great NSFW trailer ever; sheer genius from the D.P. of "Crank 2: High Voltage" and Alamo Drafthouse Films: http://tinyurl.com/3ltgbun

  6. TrackingB TV pilot contest final deadline tomorrow, hmm...$95 is a lot of money knowing that my pilot isn't 100%. Then again, will I ever think it's 100%?

    1. mercutio

      mercutio

No, you'll never think it's 100%. But yeah, $95 is a lot of coin. Tough call.

Same boat, think I'll wait for the next one, and give a couple scripts a polish to put in at the early bird price.

  7. Was Graham Moore actually a new writer when he sold Imitation Game or is that just media spin? Does anyone know his backstory?

  8. Watched Crazy, Stupid Love and really enjoyed it and was impressed with the writing. Is the script close to the film?

    1. mebishop2001

      mebishop2001

Pretty close. The movie in my mind when reading the spec was better than the final product, but still pretty good. I think a different director might have improved it a little. If you like that, check out other Dan Fogelman scripts like MY MOTHER'S CURSE.

    2. sbbn

      sbbn

Loved the script and read it some 6-7 months before I saw the movie. I felt the movie was very close to the script, particularly when compared to how some films look in relation to the script.

    3. sbbn

      sbbn

Btw, definitely worth reading the script - it is very, very well written and a great example of how a script should look.

  9. Watched pilot of Hemlock Grove. Famke seems really miscast, agree? And the two cute boys, one really pale and the other darker who may be a werewolf. Hmm, where have I seen this before? ;-)

  10. Watched Silver Linings Playbook again. SO GREAT. I wish the choreographer would get some attention, the dance is amazing.

I got dragged to it but LOVED it. Great movie. The dance was great.

I just watched the screener a couple days ago and loved it. Now I feel guilty for not supporting it by buying a ticket to see it in the theater.

    3. sbbn

      sbbn

Can't wait to see it. I was ambivalent but read the screenplay after seeing all the love it was getting and man alive, that was a well-written screenplay.

  11. Watched the pilot for "The Strain" today. It's good, but I had hoped for better. It doesn't hit with the impact of Darabont's Walking Dead pilot. Del Toro directed and the casting and performances are a bit rough. Only the first ep, so I'm sure it will find its groove.

I agree. Was unfortunately disappointed. Not bad, just not anything to get super excited over.

I'm going to stick with it, as I read the books and there's a great mythology there. It has top-notch vfx, I'll say that, and Cory Stoll as always is great.

it means that producers are requesting that agents/managers allow them to take in a spec script to their respective studios. So if Producer A has a deal or relationships with certain studios or buyers, they would want an exclusive right to submit a spec to those places.

To add to Barzini's post, producers will often seek to obtain territories beyond their particular studio.

I don't think you have to join trackingB to enter in their contests. I've heard great things about their contests too but I wouldn't join just for that if you can enter the contest without being a member.

  18. What's the tracking on Lone Ranger? If it bombs, I'm picking up Disney stock. But it looks good so I don't WANT it to bomb, despite my lust for gold, ya know?

Hard to say, really - it definitely fits the four quadrants marketing needs it to. It's Disney and Depp, so that should help...assuming star power isn't dead. I'm going to go with a soft "yes".

Currently 22% on RT, but at the end of the day won't word of mouth matter more? I for one am curious to see Depp as Tonto, and the TV ads I've seen suggest a fun ride.

I'm not surprised when a film contains the name Craig Mazin in the credits. He's not exactly the stamp of quality.

      SFscribe

I actually really like Craig on his podcasts. He's smart and funny and I really wish I could say the same for his scripts.I'd like to think it's the collaboration effect...

You know what? I'm starting to think that we the movie-going public got punked with this one. I'm being serious. Like maybe it was the studio's way of saying, "Look what you suckers are willing to shell out $12 for!" Hahahaha...

Sounds nuts but...I'm being totally serious.

I didn't get that it was a tribute to musicals and 90% of the content focused on Chicago and Dreamgirls. ???

    3. dsjones

      dsjones

ScarJo probably didn't want to put in an appearance after "I saw your boobs" took a shot at her. As for the musicals...the producers of the Oscars were the ones behind those musicals (except Les Mis) so it was blatant self-promoting/fellatio. Disgusted personally. The Bond "tribute" was astonishingly horrendous.
