  1. Anyone interested in starting a script reading club? Trying to read more this coming year.

  2. Good Lord, I can't wait until the Black List comes out so I can read something interesting... It's dry as the Sahara out here...

There are not many scripts these days, though I have liked some of the older stuff up. List and Pilot seasons are gonna be like Xmas.

  9. Question: What is the policy for posting spec scripts for existing shows in the WiP section? Applying for fellowship and looking for feedback, but not sure how this works.

  10. Super behind on TV pilots, but I've read a few and what the hell people? 69 pages for a network pilot with VERY TIGHT as your spacing settings? Who are you kidding?

Presumably they intend to cut after the initial draft the network reads, as an excuse to include ideas they could repurpose for later episodes, or to test out characters/plotlines that might be iffy. A TV writer friend told me a good length for a spec pilot is 65 pages. I've seen shooting scripts for recent hour-long dramas (regular episodes, not pilots) that are as short as 42.

  11. Any good comic book scripts? By that I mean what the artist takes from the writer and interprets into the panels/pages? I'm surprised there are no books of side to side comparisons...

In general I find the easiest thing to do is draw three horizontal lines on the page, creating three tiers, and split two of those tiers into two equally-sized panels. Bam -- five-panel page. And you can do some variety with it. It's a good "starter" for just figuring out how to pace a story and have a distinct visual element on each page.

I wrote an article on sources for finding out about this and some script compilations: http://www.usatoday.com/story/popcandy/2012/11/28/comic-book/1732735/

  13. Out of graduate class, so going to spend the next few weeks breaking down some episodic scripts for TV shows using a spreadsheet -- figure out scene lengths, how much plot one can pack in. Then, it's spec-writin' time!

BRAZEN: It turns out the guy who wrote that blog is the brother of my friend Steve, a comic-book inker. And this is in North Carolina, not LA. It's like a Kevin Bacon thing or something!
