  1. Can you recommend any scripts where a guy is alienated from his daughter/wife/ex-wife/family/co-workers and somehow connects or reconnects with them through the course of the story?

Cool. Thanks. Yeah, I'm looking more for the guy estranged from his wife and daughter...so these suggestions help.

Thanks guys for the suggestions. I'll take a look. I was looking for scripts where the lead or one of the characters has conflict with those around him and then has to somehow resolve that...maybe, some character flaw is keeping him from doing that.

  3. For my current script, I'm looking for great journalism movies/scripts to study if anyone has recommendations (looking for lesser known stuff). I started a thread in the "Looking For...'" section if anyone wants to respond. Thanks.

  5. Any box office experts here-- Passengers is nearing 300 million world wide--is that a hit? What is the likely profit? Not sure how it all breaks down after advertising and theater split. I imagine they will also add a lot more money from streaming and other revenue.

Btw, I read somewhere that Tommy Boy was a dud at the box office, but was a major money cow for Paramount for the next ten years in the after-theater revenue. I'm just curious how all that works. If all these movies are losses, the studios should be in bankruptcy by now.

I personally loved the movie. Saw it 3 times in the theater. The friends and family I went with seem to really love it too. I never read the script so was surprised at how good it was. I am just afraid that after this the studios will have an excuse to give us all superhero movies, branded IP and sequels. I'm getting super hero fatigue. Even Star Wars and Back to the Future started out as original ideas.

  7. Do you have any recommendations of scripts where the protagonists alienates everyone? I.e. like Jack Nicholson's character in As Good as it gets?

Yeah, I loved Nightcrawler. Though, I was looking more for As Good As it Gets type where the protagonist basically alienates everyone in his world.

Interesting. Thanks. I think I had that script but never looked at it. There was another script with a similar plot except the girl in that one had cancer, which I thought was an amazing script. Really moving.

Oh cool. Thanks. I wouldn't have thought of that from the trailer.

JJ Abrams read the Rian Johnson script for the next one and felt regret that he's not directing that one because that script is that good. I can't wait to see Rian Johnson's vision for that one...and he is also writing Episode 9.

I got that feeling from the trailers. Gosh, I wish they could recapture the magic of Empire Strikes Back....that was quite the experience. Anyone concerned that they're going to have a different writer for the next one? No continuity... Such different writing styles...

So, you don't feel like it breaks new ground the way Empire Strikes Back did? Empire blew my expectations out of the water.

i.e. the slow periods... times when everyone's away on vacation or per-ocupied with something else... most of the war chest has been spent.

  18. I'm freaking out. I know this happens all the time, but I am about 1 or 2 months away from finishing a script that has the EXACT SAME CONCEPT as another project that was announced in the trades. I am very proud of this script and feel it is the best thing I have written. But I can already hear the rebuttals, and I don't want to waste my time working on something that seems to be dead out of the gate. What would you guys do?

    1. Preminger

      Preminger

This actually brings up an interesting topic that I always wondered about. There was like 14 competing projects that was similar to Liar Liar.... and a ton of projects that featured the famous female pirate... how similar does the project have to be? Lucy looked a lot like Limitless and both look a lot like this 1950s movie I saw about a guy who becomes a genius... while sharing a central concept, the execution of those scripts were quite different. Different characters, different choices...

  24. How do you get extra tivo space?

    1. Preminger

      Preminger

I think that's the one I have....it's pretty slow. I think some of the shows on HD take up a lot of space. I remember deleting the show "100" and each hour was literally 1%, so I was able to eliminate 21% just by deleting that season of 100. I almost do not record sports games anymore because they take up 4 hours...

Direct TV. I asked for their HD tivo, which they said was supposed to have a lot hours, but didn't seem like it. It filled up quick. I already have 2 boxes for myself and it filled up quick. There's just not enough time in a week to watch everything.
