  1. Just a friendly reminder TO BACK ALL YOUR SHIT UP.

  2. Is there a reason both Paddington movies are released in early January stateside and miss the Oscar cut-off? These movies are amazing (I see Paddington 1 wasn't even nominated in the animation category).

  3. Testing out the black list. Anyone have a really good experience with the site?

Everything I hear is of a similar nature, especially the contradictory nature of reviews. You expect people to react differently to a script, but not THAT differently. It could be an ending should be improved, most endings COULD be improved, but some people are more willing to except a straightforward, traditional ending. But still, people getting a new 8 and. 3 for the same script?!

  4. Any box office experts here-- Passengers is nearing 300 million world wide--is that a hit? What is the likely profit? Not sure how it all breaks down after advertising and theater split. I imagine they will also add a lot more money from streaming and other revenue.

... then and now it's a lot less. Passengers was supposed to be a little film costing $40 million not a Gravity/Interstellar/Martian type blockbuster. In my humble opinion.

It's 40% of the BO - so that would be $120 million - minus the production cost and the cost of advertising, etc. That would be about 70% of the production cost, maybe more. That would e $84 million. So $120 million minus $204 million = $84 million loss. No citations here but this is based on stuff I've read about over the years. Also Pearl harbor made double its worldwide BO in the aftermarket - some $800 million after it left movie theaters. But that was...

  6. After reading several scripts from the black list, two things have become clear: It's breathe, not breath and use your damn spell check. Unreal.

Do you like reading stuff you've written? I do. Not egoistical at all, if it's good stuff. A lot of people - I suspect - don't like, don't want to re-read their own stuff. If you re-read it, you will spot MOST mistakes. If you don't you won't.

Interesting... but if they weren't good enough to make Blood, Brit, Hit or Black... still, female protagonist with female support, diverse casting, all good stuff and I'd encourage it.

  8. So who wants to take a guess at what this A24 untitled trailer is for? It's A24, so whatever they are selling, I'm buying.

There's something calle Slice listed on A24's Wikipedia page but it goes nowhere. The other films they're releasing don't fit. Probably, though, we're not meant to know. (Looks a bit ike a car commercial to me, but I'm old).

  9. Has anyone read this years BlackList winner "Blonde Ambition"? Thoughts?

@sbbn Ha! So true... if you're name's Sorkin. And there have been scripts like The Libertine which did well (on the Black List) but the odds are always on the more fast paced scripts. Social Network (indeed, most scripts based on good true stories) had a lot of stuff to get through. i've read amateur scripts where it's quite clear from the first ten, fifteen that the writer doesn't have enough story to fill the pages. There are always exceptions... but in the main what...

Read some of it. Typical biopic material but... so important for amateur writers to see SHORT SCENES and lots of them. quickest way to spot an amateur script is if there's a severe page dialogue scene within the first ten pages. Pretty sure sign that you don't have enough material and are already having to pad things out. that BA does not do and it's that PACE as well as the subject matter that made people like it.

Or Die Hard retold as a contained thriller from the point of view of Argyle. Or an edgy new take on Oliver Twist where Fagin says "I'm the greatest pickpocket, just the greatest. Everybody says so." RIP new stories? RIP The Black List?

  12. Black List announced tomorrow. They've moved it up a day from the 14th - the day before Rogue One opens. I guess they figured no one would be interested in the new Star Wars movie. Will we be allowed to see the scripts? Already I've gotten... heat over distributing O2. How do they expect to generate... heat if they won't let people see the scripts?

A movie about a female action hero written by a female screenwriter. Not Hodson, another woman... but still, progress? A little bit?

An excellent series, I hope people can get a chance to see it.

  15. Saw Independence Day 2 this morning. Good, enjoyable, not spectacular, not as good as the original but it was never going to be. What's really important to note is the diversity of the cast, and to an extent the setting. Men, women, black, Chinese, British, French. It's something we're all going to have think about as the box office changes.

Maybe they were put off by the gay romance. Still, I would advocate diversity.

  17. Okay, I know it's a cliche old standby, but... What is the best (still) unproduced script you've ever read?

    1. Scott Crawford

      Scott Crawford

A few action scripts I think could make good movies with a little rewriting, like MOTORCADE or THE MAN WITH THE FOOTBALL, STOPPING POWER, BLADES - they're all a little cheesy but they could be really exciting if done right.

  18. There's a widely accepted structural perimeter, or axiom in screenwriting that generally insists on character arc. "In what ways is your character different in the end from in the beginning?" Consider Anton Chigurh in No Country For Old Men and Daniel Plainview in There Will Be Blood. I see no arc in who they are as people/characters. Yes, the story itself has an arc, but how are either of these characters different in the end from the beginning? Other examples of such?

    1. Scott Crawford

      Scott Crawford

There's no rule on having a character arc, but for most amateur writers looking to sell spec scripts, I'd recommend it. The two examples you gave are not enough to dodge the work of giving your hero an inner journey.

  19. Watched CA: Civil War last night, and I have to say, it is the best film Marvel have made to date. Spider-man gets more screen time than I imagined. And as for Black Panther, is the best hero to enter the MCU in a long time. The costume, his fighting style make him so bad-ass. I cannot wait for his solo outing.

Saw it yesterday. People may be a little fed up of superhero movies (not me, not yet) but I still think there's a lot for writers to learn, from how to write ensemble to giving your minor characters their big moment.
