  1. Does anyone have a recommendation for a great evening/weekend screenwriting class (film or TV) in LA or NYC that has you finish a draft of something by the end of it?

Check out Scott Myer on Twitter. I know he does something like that online.

This is my first time logging in since the new year so I just saw these but they've both already proven to be super useful suggestions - thank you!

  2. Just saw "Jaws" for the first time (!) at a local theater and now I'm reading the script. It's interesting to see what was changed in the final shoot - you can really see what they were trying to accomplish in a scene by reading what they tried first (this is actually at least the third draft I know of, probably more like the 100th). http://www.dailyscript.com/scripts/Jaws.txt

It wouldn't work! So Spielberg freestyled the "less is more" angle...and it worked GLORIOUSLY. Added a new element to film making. And subsequently went on to INVENT the "Summer Blockbuster".

Great editing. A workshop in suspense.

I did love it! I need to watch it again after reading the screenplay.

  3. I know this is old news but I'm on p. 70 of Justin Marks' "Earth Prime" and I'm loving it so hard. I can't believe no one bought this - maybe because the budget would have been 80 quadrillion dollars.

Thinking about this more, if there was one thing I'd change, I'd slow it down a notch in Act II. The pace is so frenetic, and the body count so high, that I come out of it only feeling about 3/4 of the emotion I should be. I'd maybe swap one of those big set pieces (maybe the showdown with the skinhead's brother since I don't think that subplot adds very much) and add in another scene like the one with Bijou in the bathroom, or maybe somehow extend that one. It all just ha...

My comment cut off but all I said was, "It all just happens so fast."

I thought it was all sort of mechanical. A lot of the action reads like the writer doesn't care and just wants to get it over with.

  4. Just finished "When the Street Lights Go On." It's beautifully written and a hell of a page turner, but there's a certain thinness to the story. Reminds me of "The Virgin Suicides" in that way (and obviously in other ways too). Still, I'd pay to see it, I think.

That's what I thought too! It breaks every storytelling rule but still ends up being a really beautiful, engaging read.

i liked this script... it fell short, but had alotta heart and, if barrymore doesn't fuck it up, will be a good film

This is a TV show now on Hulu! Or will be this year.

  5. NSFW had me on the edge of my seat the whole way through. I forgot I was reading a screenplay! Felt super short though?

It's a thriller set in a law office. A paralegal is locked in the office after hours and has to escape an armed killer while unraveling a conspiracy in the office. It was very suspenseful! The screenplay is available in the Specs of 2011 forum.

Sounds decent. I think I've just found my lunch hour read.

  6. Still looking for scripts from Castle seasons 2 and 3. Anyone have anything at all? All I've got are season 1. P&T!

  7. Reading the pilot for "The Killing" right now. This script handles expository dialogue really, really well.

Thanks for the link! I was looking for it and turning up empty.

  8. So excited for MORE AS THE STORY DEVELOPS. That script is everything a pilot should be.

Agreed. a Perfect mix of "Sports Night" + "West Wing" and "Studio 60". Loved it!

Best part is how he used an event that we already knew about and still managed to build tension re: how shit would go down.

Yes! I couldn't put the script down and by the end I was breathless and totally hooked. I rarely feel that after reading a pilot.
