Don't get me wrong, I don't necessarily disagree with Amanda. She is right: screenwriting is an incredibly difficult, almost impossible career to achieve any kind of success in. I just think that taking career advice from someone with no actual professional screenwriting experience might not be the best way to proceed if you're serious about it. Don't let someone who doesn't really know bring you down.

Funforall, I don't think it's the industry intentionally trying to mislead aspiring writers, but rather the media's desire for a STORY. What would you rather read? "Overnight success breaks in with million dollar script sale" or "part-time screenwriter of twelve years with nineteen scripts under his belt finally scores a $10k option"? And as one poster above noted, the agents and writer want the heat associated with those big headlines, whether or not they...

Awesome! Just append /rss to the end of the url, and it should work for most podcatchers.

  4. Taking a poll here: What's your preference for a character who is not visible, but heard - speaking on the phone (via speakerphone for ex.): (V.O.) (O.S.) or (O.C.)?

Depending on the context, you could just put INTERCUT - PHONE CONVERSATION and write the conversation without VO or OS. I tend to prefer this.

      I like that Shadow.

I'm with you Bobby - VO just doesn't feel right. Ultimately, I think you go with whatever works best for you and adjust later if you get comments about the story being interrupted because of how you portray the phone calls . . . good luck!

I've used varying styles. Mostly, however, I utilize (ON PHONE) as an extension or (filtered, phone) as a parenthetical. It's all a style choice. Whatever works best in the scene and fits with the overall tone.

"Giving notes is not writing. Helping to shape a story is not writing." Very true.

  6. At this rate, there will be around 70 specs sold this year.- From BL: "Sony Pictures Entertainment acquires science fiction spec script “Leviathan” written by Cole Haddon. Haddon is repped by WME and Anonymous Content. By my count, this is the 30th spec script sale of 2014. There were 53 spec script sales year-to-date in 2013."

Why TB engaged for so long I have no idea. My favorite part is Franklin claiming he "won" some argument after TB said they were not going to reply to his childish tantrums, and stopped, as they said they would. So embarrasing.

Was Franklin looking to "out" members, or owners? I felt he was referring to those who run the site.

Not sure. Truthfully, I read half of it, told the team I thought replying was a mistake. Don't give in to someone else's ego trying too bully info on the internet for christs sake. Just childish all around, IMO.

"Out of a 100,000 90% are trash." Which would leave ~10,000, so the question becomes what happens to THESE scripts/writers. If the 62 scripts being sold are all from those writers who are already connected does it even matter if we discover the unknown "Bob Dylan?"

Of course Pizzolatto read Pizzolatto - he says exactly that in interviews and has stated that his writing was influential in the show. In fact, he's tells people in interviews to go read Ligotti's books.

    3. sbbn

      sbbn

Plagiarism is a fuzzy thing in literary works. It's not a simple as "oh, he used lines from such and such (which happens all the time in books and films). As far as I am aware, True Det. is not a plot lifted or characters taken directly from Pizzolatto's books - it's a character who quotes from books that influenced his philosophy on the way he sees the world (which is a very human thing to do).

    4. sbbn

      sbbn

If the character was only quoting Shakespeare and each time saying "and this, by the way, is a direct quote from a writer known as Shakespeare" no one would give a damn. But it would be pretty stupid.
