  1. Will the spec market ever be like the golden age of the 90s again? You used to see a sale every week, where big sales were common place. More projects were in development and a wider variety of projects, non-IP....

pilots vary, but lower than features. spec pilots go for anything from $100-$200k (though we just sold one for $400k from a newcomer - so these are average more than anything), options from $15-30k. But all of these numbers can dramatically change when there is packaging involved, etc.

Because there are so fewer output options for spec pilots, there is less money to spend in development, and at this point every network/cable outlet has already overbought... they...

Packaging is incredibly hot (quickest way to get specs made, and the pilot spec market is considerably hotter than the feature spec market at the moment. Sales are averaging in the $200-$400k range at the moment, and options between $30-$50k.

2013 was the best year since the 90s, w/ 2014 being good, but not as good as the record setting 2013, but still good % set up per those to hit market.

I doubt we'll ever see it like it was in the 90s because of the massive uprise of IP, remakes, sequels, etc. But, it's not entirely gone by the way side. Over 400 went out last in 2013, over 300 in 2014, and almost 50% are set up (sale or option) each year. For many those are launching points into the next phase of careers for writers (assignments, OWAs, etc.). Heck, I know the TB Launch Pad competition has helped set up something in the vicinity of 20 specs in the past 2 years, and w...

  5. Just wanted to say how much I appreciate this forum. And yes - I have been drinking :)

  6. Anyone else mildly annoyed by the spec "racing into territories" hype? Producers bring specs into territories. That's just the way it works. A spec going into territories is not particularly newsworthy.

For those of us who's job it is to track material on the market and to know who's buying what (as I do in my day job) it's essential. Of course producers take territories - it's knowing who is taking what into a studio, and which studios are looking for and buying what.

  7. 2014 Hit List Recommendation: Remember by Benjamin August. It's slow and understated, but worth the journey.

  8. How many specs sold in 2014? I'm guessing 74.

  9. WHIPLASH was the best movie of 2014. UNBROKEN was the most disappointing.

Completely agree. 2014 was a very mediocre year for film, and most of the end of year "awards bait" has been subpar at best, relying on "names" far more than quality itself.

  10. Happy Holidays to one and all. Just like to say this consistently stays a great resource. Thanks to all the contributors - Hit List, Black List, FYC scripts, old scripts, spec scripts, TV scripts. Just great. Thank you. Now make sure you read some of the scripts instead of just having a million of them. So much to learn. Never give up on your writing dreams. Never ever.

  11. when does the hit list come out?

  12. I know this is a dead topic...but the more I think about it, it must be said: Interstellar is a complete mess.

  14. Would it be appropriate to post the coverage I received for my LPFC entry? I found it really insightful and helpful.

  15. Is the LaunchPad Pilot Competition happening later then it did last year???

  16. So now Robin Hood is the latest competing project/spec craze? Again...

  17. Are we allowed to submit a short film workprint in the WIP section?
